HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-05-15 VAC Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA May 15, 2019 6:00 pm A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6:05 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, located at 315 Fourth Ave, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Balolong , Larkin, Mueller, Vice Chair Sears and Chair Torres ABSENT: Commissioners Bartlett and Wynne ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Thunberg and SRO Secretary Claudia Bravo CONSENT CALENDAR 1. Approval of Minutes From April 17, 2019 ACTION: Vice Chair Sears moved to approve the minutes from April 17, 2019 as written. Commissioner Larkin seconded the motion, and it passed by the following vote: Yes: Balolong, Mueller and Chair Torres No: 0 Public Comments: None ACTION ITEMS 2. VOY INFORMATION Commissioner Balolong indicated that the San Diego Veterans Museum is no longer taking submissions for VOY 2019. Page 1 I Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes May 15,2019 3. CITY WEBSITE UPDATE Commissioner Larkin has a list resources for veterans. The list includes housing, psychological services and advocacy for veterans. 4. FALLEN HEROES BANNERS Vice Chair Sears reached out to Board of Directors, Randy Bellamus of the Third Avenue Village Association. Board of Director Bellamus indicated that he received an email from Marketing and Communications Manger Steinberger, who confirmed that the banners will be installed May 19`" and removing them June 2aa 5. SPECIAL MEETING AND CHANGING LOCATION OF REGULAR MEETING Vice Chair Sears discussed changing the location to make the meetings more accessible to the public. The possibility of having a Special meeting at Southwestern College or the Chula Vista Public Library. ACTION: Vice Chair Sears made a motion to have a Special Meeting on June 19`" at Southwestern College, 900 Otay Lakes Rd, CV 91910. Commissioner Balolong seconded the motion, and it passed by the following vote: Yes: Mueller, Larkin and Chair Torres No: 0 Staff Comments: Capt. Thunberg confirmed the Fallen Heroes Banners will be placed on Third Avenue in Chula Vista. The banners will be up for two weeks May 19—June 2. Also reference media interaction, Capt. Thunberg stated that the City Office of Communications and the City Clerk's Office is the governing body for this board, so they would have the responsibility to put out press releases for the board. Capt. Thunberg recommended possibly bringing in a resource for housing, employment or someone who has a story to tell. (Commissioner Larkin stepped out 6:24, returned 6:29) Chair Comments: Veterans Activity Log to be added as a permanent Action Item. Chair Torres spoke regarding a memorial/honor flight at Lindberg Field focusing on WWII veterans. Commissioners' Comments: Vice Chair Sears has put together a list of Veterans Agencies in South Bay,will continue to add to the list. Upcoming events for Memorial Day at Glen Abbey, there will be a speaker and program.
