RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CHULA VISTA APPROVING THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE
PARK BOUNDARIES OF SDG&E PARK EAST, SDG&E
PARK WEST, LOMA VERDE PARK, AND RIENSTRA PARK
INTO LOMA VERDE SPORTS PARK
WHEREAS, Loma Verde Park and Rienstra Park have been identified as Chula Vista
Parks since 1974; and
WHEREAS, SDG&E Park East and SDG&E Park West are park sites located on a public
utility corridor and are leased by the City from San Diego Gas & Electric; and
WHEREAS, the original lease agreement between the City and San Diego Gas & Electric
began in 1977; and
WHEREAS, all of these park sites are located adjacent to one another; and
WHEREAS, consolidating all four park sites into one unified park complex provides
several benefits; and
WHEREAS, the primary benefit is to allow the City of Chula Vista the opportunity to
utilize the demographic data surrounding SDG&E West Park to count towards grant funding
opportunities through the State of California’s Proposition 68 Statewide Parks Program for
potential redevelopment projects at all four park sites, including what is currently Loma Verde
Park and Rienstra Park; and
WHEREAS, the current demographic data surrounding Loma Verde Park and Rienstra
Park do not qualify the City from applying for the State of California’s Proposition 68 Statewide
Parks Program; and
WHEREAS, all four current park sites serve the same community; and
WHEREAS, if the City could qualify for grant funding at the consolidated park site, the
first grant application would be to redevelop the Loma Verde Recreation Center and Aquatic
Center to better service the community’s needs; and
WHEREAS, another benefit of consolidating the four park sites into one would be to
create a more regional draw due to a much larger park site with combined amenities; and
WHEREAS, the combined acreage of the 4 parks would be 39.35 acres, putting Loma
Verde Sports Park as the second largest park in Chula Vista.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Chula
Vista, that it hereby approves the consolidation of the park boundaries of SDG&E Park East,
SDG&E Park West, Loma Verde Park, and Rienstra Park into Loma Verde Sports Park.
