AGENDA STATEMENT Item 1
Meeting Date 6-20-85
ITEM TITLE: Report - Review of Alternative City Logos
SUBMITTED BY: Director of Management Services (4/5ths Vote: Yes_ NoX )
REVIEWED BY: City Manager
At its meeting of April 22, the City Council reviewed several rough design alternatives
for a City logo and selected two alternatives for further consideration. At that
meeting, the Council asked the design consultant to refine these two alternatives,
including the preparation of color renderings and typical applications.
On May 30, the design consultant presented to the Council the refinements and
typical applications for the two logo design alternatives the Council had selected.
That artwork has been displayed in the Mayor/Council Office area since May 30.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council select one of the two logo design alternatives, and
authorize further artwork to be prepared for that alternative.
BOARDS/COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION: The Logo Subcommittee of the City Council presented
five logo design alternatives to the City Council on April 22. The two logo alternatives
currently being considered are among those suggested by the Subcommittee.
DISCUSSION
The artwork for the two design alternatives being considered is still in somewhat
rough form. If one of the design alternatives is selected by the City Council, the
design consultant will prepare more refined versions of that alternative for
subsequent City Council review. If those more refined versions of the logo design
are then approved by the Council, the design consultant will prepare "camera ready"
artwork for final acceptance and adoption as the official City logo.
If the City Council provides entirely new direction to the design consultant, additional
charges may be incurred.
To help provide some perspective on selecting a design direction for a City logo,
Len Torres' summary and analysis of the November 1984 Council survey is attached.
As you may recall, four Council members and the City Manager completed that questionnaire.
At the time the "camera ready" versions of both the City seal and logo are brought
back to the Council for final acceptance and adoption, staff will recommend a policy
on the respective uses of the City seal and logo. Alternative methods of transitioning
to the new City seal and logo will also need to be addressed.
FISCAL IMPACT: Adequate funds are included in the FY 1984-85 budget to complete "camera
ready" artwork for the new City seal and logo. If the Council provides entirely new
direction regarding the development of a City logo, however, additional funding may
be required.
The implementation of a new City logo and seal will have a fiscal impact in FY 1985-86
that will be the subject of a future report.

Survey Analysis -
Most of the council considers the current seal to be
innaccurate. At the very least, it should be
corrected.
There is a broad agreement concerning the elements of
the new seal; they should be geographical, situational
images that will form a positive scene depicting life
in Chula Vista.
There is a unanimous response concerning the creation
of two marks; an official seal and a contemporary logo.
The official seal should perhaps utilize all the
geographical elements agreed upon in the questionnaire
while the logo can be a simplified, forward-looking
symbol.
