HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-01-08 CAC MinutesCITY OF CHULA VISTA Cultural Arts Commission MEETING MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA January 8, 2018 CALL TO ORDER 6:16pm ROLL CALL: Civic Center Building A Conference Room C 10 1 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista 91910 Present: Chair Cazares; Vice Chair Rodriguez; Commissioners; Delgado, Gore, and Sywyj Absent: Commissioners Gray, Maynard, Penunuri, Daniels CONSENT CALENDAR The Board/Commission will enact the Consent Calendar staff recommendations by one motion, without discussion, unless a Board/Commission Member, a member of the public, or staff requests that an item be removed for discussion. If you wish to speak on one of these items, please fill out a "Request to Speak" form and submit it to the Secretary prior to the meeting. Items pulled from the Consent Calendar will be discussed immediately following the Consent Calendar. 1. Declaration of excused/unexcused absenteeism November 13, 2017 Commissioner Gore Commissioner Delgado Motion to approve made by Commissioner Sywyj and seconded by Chair Cazares. Motion to approve passed unanimously. 2. Approval of minutes November 13, 2017 Motion to approve made by Commissioner Rodriguez and seconded by Commissioner Sywyj. Motion to approve passed unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS Several members of the public from Creative Flow Arts & Entertainment were present at the meeting. INFO ITEM(S) 3. Presentation of the Chula Vista Heritage Museum's Fronterizos Project- Barbara Zaragoza; South Bay Historical Society Barbara Zaragoza provided an overview of the project and exhibition that will open on January 27h. Fronterizos is a Performing and Visual Arts Grant recipient. Staff assisted with the applicant on the marketing and promotional material for this project. 4. Presentation of the Age Friendly Drawing Contest — Nicholas Paul and Tanairi Romano; City of Chula Vista Age-Friendly/Healthy Chula Vista Initiative City staff, Nick and Tana provided an overview of the Age Friendly Drawing Contest that will be opened to elementary school children. They will work with Cultural Arts staff to promote the event and possible opportunities to exhibit the work. One to two CAC Commissioners will be asked to participate in the judging of the contest once it closes. Cultural Arts Commission Subcommittees Updates - Lynnette Tessitore; Cultural Arts Manager a. Cultural Arts Assets Mapping (Assets Mapping) Staff met with the Assets Mapping subcommittee. Outreach for the project was. The Cultural Arts Commission discussed at length the subcommittee's recommendation that the project be branded as the You Are Here project using an icon similar to the google red location pin. The Cultural Arts Commission, by consensus, determined that the project would be branded as Your Art Here. Staff will establish a subpage under the Cultural Arts webpage. b. Funding and Grants (F&G) Staff gave the CAC an update on activities to date. Staff and the F&G subcommittee met and discussed this year's PVAG timeline and applicant outreach. It was discussed that this year the F&G subcommittee would like to provide potential applicants more than one opportunity for technical assistance (i.e. webinar and one on one's). The timeline was discussed with release of the application in mid to late February. The grant period will open for approximately 6 weeks. This year staff will ask previous PVAG grantees to sit on the PVAG Committee. 6. Discussion of Potential Changes to the Cultural Arts Commission Appointment Process — Lynnette Tessitore; Cultural Arts Manager The Clerk's office approached staff about an opportunity for a more streamlined appointment process. This item was discussed at length and the CAC agreed for staff to bring forward to the next meeting some sample interview checklist questions for discussion. OTHER -BUSINESS 7. STAFF COMMENTS NONE 8.
