RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CHULA VISTA IN SUPPORT OF PREVENTING GUN
VIOLENCE
WHEREAS, the City of Chula Vista is a growing city of over 250,000 people with three
public school districts, thriving arts, entertainment and recreational sectors, and engaged citizens
deeply committed to the safety and welfare of its residents; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chula Vista recognizes the Second Amendment right of
individuals to keep and bear arms, but also notes that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the
right to bear arms is not unlimited, and federal and state governments may enact reasonable
regulations to protect the public safety; and
WHEREAS, schools across the U.S. have been impacted by shootings, resulting in the
deaths of both students and faculty, and the nation’s parents continue to worry about the safety of
their children at school; and
WHEREAS, the crisis of gun violence necessitates a collaborative approach involving
elected officials at every level of government, including school districts; and
WHEREAS, it is primarily the responsibility of our legislators at the federal and state
levels to enact reasonable, responsible, rational laws regulating the safe possession and use of
guns.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED in order to help protect our residents,
neighborhoods and schools, the City Council of the City of Chula Vista does hereby:
1. Encourage state and federal officials to be aggressive in enforcement of existing gun safety
laws.
2. Support increased federal, state, and county resources for mental health and substance abuse
treatment; and
3. Urge an integrated, school-community based, “public health” approach to gun violence that
cultivates social and emotional well-being, identifies and intervenes assertively to help troubled
students, and does not tolerate bullying, discrimination, or harassment.
4. The City Council directs that the City Clerk transmit this resolution to Chula Vista’s
representatives in the California State Assembly and Senate and the U.S. House of
Representatives, senate and the County of San Diego.
