RE: Item #9. Report on City options for participation in the defense of SB54
Date: October 23, 2018
I urge you to support an option for Chula Vista to file onto an amicus brief along with other
municipalities on the side of California in the lawsuit of US DOJ v. CA.
We stand at another crossroads this evening. In fact, these crossroads have been in front of us
many times over the past year and a half, since April 25, 2017, when the City of Chula Vista
officially approved a resolution to support our long standing CVPD policies regarding
immigration and to become a Welcoming City. This resolution affirms support for CVPD policies
that allow all residents, including immigrants, to live in safety through equal enforcement of
laws as well as procurement of city services. This resolution affirms support for CVPD policies
not to enforce immigration laws, which are the responsibility of the federal government. This
resolution also directs City staff"to track and report on federal and state legislation that
imapcts City-interests and policies on immigration enforcement," so that the City Council may
make important decisions to continue to uphold the moral values and systems of support that
keep all of us safe and healthy in Chula Vista.
These values, immigration policies, and systems of support for all residents are also reflected in
California State Legislation, especially, SB 54 The California Values Act as well as AB 450, and.AB
103. Due to a lawsuit by the US Department of Justice, some of these policies, which have
helped make our City strong, are in jeopardy now.
I urge you to take this opportunity tonight to re-affirm your commitment to the health and
safety of all residents of City Vista by taking the strongest possible action to uphold the
important values and policies of SD 54, AB 450, and AB 103.
Your actions tonight will impact all residents of Chula vista and will send a strong message to
our important Bi-National region.
Please support an option for Chula Vista to file onto an amicus brief along with other
municipalities on the side of California in the lawsuit of US DOJ v. CA.
Thank you,
