Who can participate?
Any homeowner with an existing landscape, who lives in the Otay Water District’s service area, is
eligible to receive this incentive. You must be able to convert a minimum of 750 square feet of exist-
ing turf grass or other high-water-use plants. New homes with no existing landscape must plant a
minimum of 500 square feet (only front yard qualifies).
How do I become a participant?
Submit an application. Application
If you qualify, an on-site visit will be scheduled.
Participant’s water use will be monitored, both before and after the landscape retrofit.
What kind of plants can I use in my new landscape?
Plants must be water-wise, either San Diego Natives or California-Friendly plants from climates simi-
lar to that of San Diego. Each converted area must include living plants, such as groundcovers,
shrubs and trees, which when fully mature will cover a minimum of 50% of the converted area.
How long do I have to complete my new landscape?
After approval, you will have approximately 90 days to complete your landscape. Upon completion,
call (619) 670-2291 to schedule a follow-up appointment.
How much can I be reimbursed?
$1.00 per square foot for turf grass replaced with appropriate low-water use plants. $.85 per
square foot for new homes.
Up to $200 of the cost of hiring a certified landscape designer or certified landscape architect.
About half of your expenses should be covered through this program.
When will I get my money?
Submit dated original receipts. You will receive a check shortly after your final site visit.
