CITY OF CHULA VISTA
Climate Change Working Group
ONGOING DISCUSSIONS
Revised 8-21-07
QUESTIONS
What is the anticipated future growth of Chula Vista?
IN 2005, THE CITY’S POPULATION WAS 217,543. BY 2020, THE
POPULATION IS PROJECTED TO INCREASE 24% TO REACH 268,970
RESIDENTS. HOUSING UNITS WILL ALSO INCREASE FROM 73,115 TO
104,656 (43%).
How does Chula Vista compare to other governments/regions for GHG
emissions?
CITY OF SAN DIEGO IS ONE OF THE FEW OTHER MUNICIPALITIES IN
THE COUNTY TO ACTIVELY TRACK THEIR EMISSIONS USING THE ICLEI
PROTOCAL. IN THEIR 2004 INVENTORY, THEY REPORTED A 30%
INCREASE IN COMMUNITY-WIDE EMISSIONS AND A 10% DECREASE IN
MUNICIPAL EMISSIONS.
Is Chula Vista Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) only for arterial or local streets?
IN USING THE ICLEI CITIES FOR CLIMATE PROTECTION
METHODOLOGY, VEHICLE MILES TRAVELED (VMT) DATA ONLY
INCLUDES LOCAL AND ARTERIAL STREET USE. FREEWAY DATA IS
OMIITTED BECAUSE THEIR PLANNING & DESIGN ARE GENERALLY
NOT CONSIDERED UNDER THE PURVIEW OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS.
