VEHICLES IN SAN DIEGO

WHAT IS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL?
• Hydrogen
• Propane
• Compressed Natural Gas – NGV
• Electric – HEV, PHEV, EV
• Biodiesel
• Ethanol – FFV
WHY ALTERNATIVE FUELS?
• Energy Independence
• Pollution
• Climate Change/Global Warming
• “Renewability”
THERE ARE PROS & CONS TO
EACH ALTERNATIVE FUEL!!!
Oil is the closest thing to a ‘Magic Potion’ that we have
found so far....
1 Barrel’s energy = 20,000 man hours
$70/Barrel = 1 cent for 3 hours worked
HYDROGEN
• Most long-term promise
• Most expensive (short-term)
• Furthest away
• Distracts a lot from other fuels
“Let’s go to Mars now!”
PROPANE
• A fossil fuel
• Non-renewable
• Industry not organized
• No vehicles
• No stations
COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS
(CNG)
• A fossil fuel
• Non-renewable
• Industry is organized
• Very few vehicles
• Few stations
• Expensive vehicles & stations
• Clean burning
ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Hybrids (HEV)
• Better mileage than gasoline
cars
Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV)
• Part gasoline & electric vehicle
Electric Vehicles (EV)
• Pollution shifted from mobile to
stationary sources
• Much cleaner, but no developed
business model
BIODIESEL
• Mostly made from soybeans
• Also from canola, rapeseed, used cooking &
palm oil
• Renewable
• No real modifications needed
• An experimental fuel
ETHANOL
• Currently from corn & sugarcane
• Soon from switchgrass, biowaste, wood, citrus
peel etc.
• Vehicles need to be made for it
Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV)
• 35,000 FFV in San Diego
• 2,000 FFV owned by US gov’t
• 1 ethanol station in SD
WHAT CAN YOU DO THAT IS EASY
& IMPACTFUL?
• Free parking for HEVs and FFVs
• Buy FFVs (no incremental cost)
• Buy biodiesel & ethanol from public stations
• Get a public ethanol station for Chula Vista
Do Something!!!
