HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-09-19 VAC Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA September 19, 2018 6:00 pm A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 5:58 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, located at 315 Fourth Ave, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Chair Torres, Vice Chair Sears and Commissioners Mueller, Wynne, Balolong and Larkin ABSENT: None ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Eric Thunberg Staff Liaison and SRO Secretary Claudia Bravo 1. Approval of Minutes ACTION: Vice Chair Sears moved to approve minutes from August 15, 2018 as written. Commissioner Balolong seconded motion and it carried by the following vote: Yes: Mueller, Larkin and Wynne Guest Speaker: Hank Shanstra, Senior Vice Cdr. POST 2111 VFW Public Comments: Hank Shanstra is this year's Chairman for the 2018 Veterans Walk. Mr. Shanstra provided information on this year's walk. The 2018 Veterans Walk will be held on Saturday November 3, 2018 at 9:00 am. The walk is 4 miles from the Veterans Home, at 700 E. Naples Ct. to VFW POST 2111, at 299 1 St., both in Chula Vista, CA. The WALK has been an annual community event for 17 years and it raises donations to honor over 300 CA. Veteran Home Residents. ACTION ITEM a. Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program: Vice Chair Sears indicated the VAC cannot fund this program and our not in a position to take care of it. Sears Page 1 Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes September 19,2018 discussed going to the Veterans Home Foundation to see if they will take over administrating the program and the funds can remain with the Foundation. Purchasing the brick would go through Parks and Rec and city staff would go out and perform the installation. Recommendation: Capt. Thunberg will meet with Parks and Rec Director Tracy Lamb to get more clarity on this topic and report back next month with an update. b. Vice Chair's Absence from August Meeting: Commissioner Wynne moved to approve Vice Chair's Absence from the August meeting. Seconded by Commissioner Mueller and it carried by the following vote: Yes: Larkin, Torres Balolong. c. VOY Bio and Information: Commissioner Mueller will coordinate with Adrianna, City Council, about getting it on the agenda. Commissioner Mueller will have a complete BIO on Christopher Lawrence (VOY)by the end of the week. CVVeterans a,ChulaVistaCA.oa ,Veterans of the Year email, can now be monitored by Claudia, SRO Secretary and Captain Thunberg. Time line of events for the following year. Deadline for VOY nominations is June 30th, July will be for review, August decide, September submit to city council and October present award to winner. Recommendation: Capt. Thunberg will contact Diane Howell to advertise the VOY continuously throughout the year on the city website. Staff Comments: Capt. Thunberg received an email from a Jack Gechter, a veteran, who wanted to connect with the Commission. Chair Torres will respond Mr. Gechter to get more information. Chair Comments: Torres addressed the issues of the banners. Capt. Thunberg will speak to Tracy regarding the banners and where to hang them. Commissioner Comments. Balolong will review the VOY application and make sure it is up to date and will update the commission next month.
