HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-06-11 SSC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION June 11, 2018 OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA 5:00 PM A Regular Meeting of the Sustainability Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 5:01 pm by Administrative Secretary Green in the Executive Conference Room 103, Building A, located at 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, California. Commissioner Kappes volunteered to lead the meeting due to the absences of Chair Valen and Vice Chair Romo. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Legaspi, Matthias, McMillin, and Kappes ABSENT: Chair Valen, Commissioners Romo and Mora STAFF PRESENT: Senior Conservation Specialist Wisniewski, Senior Recycling Specialist Medrano, Chief Sustainability Officer Gakunga, Recycling Specialist I Sanchez and Administrative Secretary Green. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner McMillin moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting on May 14, 2018. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Matthias and carried with the following vote: Yes — 4 Kappes, Legaspi, Matthias and McMillin No -0 Abstain — 0 PUBLIC COMMENTS Gloria J. Barry, member of Mosaic Community Garden, introduced herself and shared that her organization has been educating gardeners, acquiring recycling bins, flow meters and educating the community. INFORMATION ITEM Waste Reduction and Recycling Special Event Planning Procedure Presentation by Victor Sanchez, Recycling Specialist I Mr. Sanchez presented the City of Chula Vista's Waste Reduction and Recycling Special Event Planning Procedure and answered questions from Commissioners. Commissioner Kappes recommended reaching out to local event/party venues to communicate this procedure. ACTION ITEMS 2. None ACTIVITY REPORT No additions to Activity Report. STAFF COMMENTS Senior Conservation Specialist Wisniewski spoke on the following subjects: WEEP Grant Naturescape project, Civic Center Library's new water efficient & energy efficient restrooms, Clean Business's website has a new video highlighting local businesses, LEED certification is ongoing, Sweetwater Unified High School District is Page 1 oft Sustainability Commission Minutes holding sustainability workshops designed for teachers and two High Tech High student interns are returning for a second term in June. Senior Recycling Specialist Medrano spoke on the following subjects: CalRecycle letter explaining changes in plastics recycling has been received, polystyrene ban coming soon to San Diego, Republic presentation will be scheduled later this summer, organics, food waste & food recovery processes will be added to the Waste Reduction Special Event Planning Procedures, and cannabis waste disposal regulations are being developed. Chief Sustainability Officer Gakunga spoke on the following subjects: Black & Veatch presentation will be held on 6/13/18 8:30am at Port of San Diego, Smart Cities presentation during 6/19/18 City Council meeting will include our Police Dept. and Information Technology Dept. plans, and we are applying for funds from American Cities Climate Program. COMMISSIONERS' COMMENTS Commissioner Kappes suggested we hold a future meeting at the landfill. Commissioner Matthias shared there will be a Bay Front Design Committee meeting on Thursday, 6/14/18 6pm in Building C.
