I am the SDSU lecturer who spoke at last week's City Council meeting. I reside in Bonita, here in the South Bay. I support the resolution proposed by South Bay People Power regarding the detention and separation of children from their families on the US -Mexico border. I write now in support of the attached markups to the resolution, which strengthen the criticism of this policy, and tie it to other damaging decisions in US history. I'm new to political involvement and not familiar with Chula Vista politics, but I really see this as an issue that transcends partisanship and touches on issues of human decency. As I said in my testimony, immigrants are good people. They commit fewer crimes on average than US citizens. They work hard, keep their heads down and are in.every way worthy community members. I don't think anyone wants a completely porous border; rather, we want to recognize that every immigrant, whether "illegal" or not, is a human being with basic rights, who deserves to be treated with basic humanity. We want to recognize that they come here both pushed by events in their countries of origin, such as gang violence or globalization destroying their job base, and pulled by readily available work that American citizens are unwilling to do. THANK YOU for hearing me on this issue. Let's put Chula Vista on the map as an early supporter of humane treatment of immigrants and an early opponent of Trump's fascistic immigration policies. As a resident of San Diego County, I am outraged by the despicable and disgraceful policies of our federal government that have stripped children from the arms of their parents, caged and held them against their will, and violated their due process and basic human rights. These actions not only hurt the border community but are inhumane. I appreciate your efforts to adopt a resolution condemning these harmful practices and calling for the immediate reunification of children with their families. I support the South Bay People Power's resolution because it is an accurate and clear statement regarding the history, policies and solutions regarding family separation in the U.S. The U.S. government announced it would stop separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border, but it did not end the "zero tolerance" policy. We need to stop these practices immediately, remedy the harm they have done and prevent their recurrence. Please show your leadership by voting for this resolution and by encouraging your fellow elected leaders in Chula Vista and throughout the region and nation to do the same. As concerned citizens of the United States, we cannot stand by and allow this situation to continue. Thank you. I am proud to be a life-long resident of Chula Vista and am very hopeful that our city will be recognized as a model for other cities to follow. I would like to ask you, once again, to consider the amended resolution that our South Bay People Power group presented at the last Council meeting. I feel that it lends credence to Council Member Aguilar's proposal by justifying the necessity for the "Whereas" and "Therefore" clauses. I am appreciative of your willingness to listen and do the right thing for all community members. I am an interested and active resident of Chula Vista, and today I air writing to urge you to support the resolution proposed by South Bay People Power regarding the detention and separation of children from their families on the US -Mexico border. I cannot stand by and watch this completely wrong and inhumane action by our federal government without speaking out. Currently, I am on vacation in Ecuador, and every day I feel the stress and shame of belonging to a country which has gone down a path of inhumanity toward immigrants, especially when those immigrants are helpless children. The news of our govermnent forcibly taking children from their parents and locking them in cages with only the basic human necessities and no basic human rights or due process is a situation that I thought I would never have to see in my own country. Needless to say, people like myself and people in our local government now have the responsibility to stand up and be counted in the eyes of the world as just "doing the right thing." The federal government's inhumane actions damage and hurt all of us in the nation and in all our relationships with our border communities and with the rest of the world. I appreciate your efforts to adopt a resolution which condemns these inhumane and hannful practices and I implore our local government to call for the immediate reunification of children with their families. I support the South Bay People Power's resolution because it is an accurate and clear statement of the history, policies and solutions regarding family separation in the U.S. We need to stop to these practices immediately, remedy the harm they have done and prevent their recurrence, and none of us have the luxury at this point in history to stand back and do nothing. Please show your leadership by voting for this resolution and by encouraging your fellow elected leaders in Chula Vista and throughout the region and nation to do the same. It became clear that my original letter had errored in reference to the resolution as an immigration act. I was happy that we cleared the air and considered the issues of the unjust zero tolerance along with the pain and suffering caused by such actions. Your unwillingness to be complicit with a law that is described by most as a human rights violation has restored my faith in public service. Thank you to the Dreamers, South Bay People Power, the ACLU, attorneys, paralegals, residents of San Diego along with other constituents. On this day we took a step as leaders in our communities. Let's keep up the momentum from the bottom to the top until families are no longer separated and children reunited with their families. When our children or others ask us what we did during this time in history we will be able to hold our heads up instead of being upset because we did nothing. Family separation is an every day occurrence when federal immigration officials detain and deport our community members. • Family detention is not the solution to family separation and neither practice should be considered as a legal or effective deterrent to immigration. • Lessons from U.S. history and international law call for the immediate halt to the practice of separating families which violates civil and human rights as well as international law. • Instead the federal government should use alternates to detention and expedite reunification while allowing families to proceed through the legal court system.
