HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-05-16 VAC Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA May 16, 2018 6:00 pm A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6:05 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, located at 315 Fourth Ave, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Chair Mueller, Vice Chair Sears, Commissioners Perez, Torres and Wynne ABSENT: Commissioner Stewart resigned effective June 1, 2018 ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Eric Thunberg Staff Liaison and SRO Secretary Claudia Bravo 1. Approval of Minutes ACTION: Vice Chair Sears moved to approve minutes from April 18, 2018 as written. Commissioner Wynne seconded motion and it carried by the following vote: Yes: Mueller, Torres, and Perez. ACTION ITEMS: a. Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program: Parks and Recreation did not attend the monthly meeting. Commissioner Perez will follow up with Parks and Recreation to see if they can attend the June meeting. Commissioner Wynne will take the lead on this from this point on. Recommendation: Table topic for June meeting. . b. Veterans Memorial at Bay Front Park: Chair Mueller obtained a point of contact for this topic. Mueller had already spoken to the Mayor and sent out an email to each of the city council members who were all in support of it. Sears and Wynne suggested getting the idea in early before the development of the Bay Front. For now, they would just suggest a name dedicating a park to Veterans and families. Main question is, how does the commission go about this? Capt. Thunberg will assist in pointing the commission in the right direction. Recommendation: Capt. Thunberg will reach out to Kelly Broughton (Development Services) or Eric Crockett (Economic Development) and report back in June with an update. c. Veteran Advisory Commission Vacancies: Commissioner Perez term ends next month and will not run for re-election. Commissioner Stewart has submitted his letter of resignation effective June 1, 2018. Effective June there will be three vacancies. Sears indicated we need to recruit new members and get the word out. Torres has been recruiting and is sending out the information to potential members. Sears asked if it is possible for the city to put this information on the city website? Recommendation: Diane Howell oversees the community forum. Capt. Thunberg will contact her. d. Veteran of the Year: Nominees are due June 30, 2018, so now is the time to go out and solicit for that. The meeting following the deadline commission decides. Sears suggested the information go out on the Community Service Letter. Wynne suggest a more proactive approach. Capt. Thunberg will ask Diane to include the link and the deadline on the website. Torres will send a list to Sears and Sears will email VFW and Service Organizations with information on Veteran of the Year. Mueller would like to make flyers with the city logo. Perez suggested a photo and bio be displayed on past Veteran of Year either on the website or in a frame at the Library. Claudia will see on getting the VAC website updated to list previous winners. Mueller would also like to create a commission Facebook or Instagram. Page 2 | Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes May 16, 2018, 2018 Recommendation: Capt. Thunberg will check into the restrictions and parameters. Capt. Thunberg will check the by-laws and check with the City Attorney. Staff Comments: Commissioner Comments: Capt. Thunberg will reach out to Joe Little(CBS) and maybe he can do a story on upcoming events and awareness of the committee.
