HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-03-21 VAC MinutesMINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA March 21, 2018 6:00 pm A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called to order at 6:05 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, located at 315 Fourth Ave, Chula Vista, California. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners: Perez, Stewart, Torres, Wynne and Vice Chair Sears ABSENT: Chair Mueller, Commissioner Wunder ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Vern Sallee Staff Liaison, Shelly Robillard 1. Approval of Minutes ACTION: Vice Chair Sears moved to approve minutes as written. Stewart seconded motion and it carried by the following vote: Yes: Torres, Wynne, and Perez. Guest Speaker: Tim Farmer — Parks and Recreation ACTION ITEMS: a. Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program update: Tim Farmer gave update on the Brick Program. In 2008 the relationship was severed between the Veterans home and Friends of CV. Now we solely operate with the Friends of CV the bricks are now $100.00. Proceeds go the Friends of CV. Last year 2017, 18 bricks sold which equates to around $900.00 total. Which is higher than normal over the past ten years. Would like to partner back with the Veterans group and reestablish the program. Annual campaign from June 1St to July 31St so that by Veterans Day all the bricks are installed. VAC to help with marketing the Bricks to get the word out. Stewart recommended having a ceremony once a year in November which could drive more sales and more people from the Veterans community. If you give it more value you can get support from VFW, FRA, American Legion etc. Recommendation: Parks and Recreation will come back in May with hard information, cost, split etc. Put on May's Agenda and revisit this topic. Page 1 I Veterans Advisory Commission Minutes February 21, 2018 b. Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park: Stewart talked to Greg Cox we would have to pursue funding and see what will come of it. Two potential projects that are very similar and our window of opportunity has passed us by because of all the changes on Yd Ave. Recommendation: Not to pursue this effort and focus our attention on the other project, Bay Front Park. Stewart motion to proceed with the Veterans Memorial at Bay Front Park and abandon the Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park, Wynne Second the motion, all in favor, yes. c. Veteran Memorial at Bay Front Park: Need to get together with Jennifer to see if the letter has been done. Vice Chair Sears will contact Jennifer and have her send the letter to Claudia and for her to Broadcast letter as a draft to the rest of the committee for approval. d. Veterans Activities Report: Torres advised nobody got back to him from American Legion, VFW and Elks Club. Stewart to give email address for Angel Castillo at American Legion and Stewart will get a response from Elks and VFW. Recommendation: Table topic for April meeting. Staff Comments: Capt. Sallee contacted the city clerk's office and they will be sending Kristine a letter clarifying because she never called back. Kristine's term expires in June. Commissioner Comments: Anthony potentially leaving, will know in two weeks. Perez invited Jonathan White from SWC to come speak to us next month, put on next month's agenda. SWC has a memorial garden outside veteran's resource center and would like him to discuss all the activities they do for veterans. Torres will coordinate with Capt. Sallee to drop off banners. Wynne recruit for positions on the board. WWII Veteran's home being renovated, Councilman Diaz was extremely helpful a fantastic with this event. Featured in American Legion Magazine.
