6:00 pm
A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called
to order at 6:05 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, located at 315 Fourth Ave, Chula
Vista, California.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Commissioners: Perez, Stewart, Torres, Wynne and Vice Chair
Sears
ABSENT: Chair Mueller, Commissioner Wunder
ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Vern Sallee Staff Liaison, Shelly Robillard
1. Approval of Minutes
ACTION: Vice Chair Sears moved to approve minutes as written. Stewart seconded motion and
it carried by the following vote: Yes: Torres, Wynne, and Perez.
Guest Speaker: Tim Farmer — Parks and Recreation
ACTION ITEMS:
a. Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program update: Tim Farmer gave update
on the Brick Program. In 2008 the relationship was severed between the Veterans
home and Friends of CV. Now we solely operate with the Friends of CV the
bricks are now $100.00. Proceeds go the Friends of CV. Last year 2017, 18 bricks
sold which equates to around $900.00 total. Which is higher than normal over the
past ten years. Would like to partner back with the Veterans group and reestablish
the program. Annual campaign from June 1St to July 31St so that by Veterans Day
all the bricks are installed. VAC to help with marketing the Bricks to get the word
out. Stewart recommended having a ceremony once a year in November which
could drive more sales and more people from the Veterans community. If you
give it more value you can get support from VFW, FRA, American Legion etc.
Recommendation: Parks and Recreation will come back in May with hard
information, cost, split etc. Put on May's Agenda and revisit this topic.

b. Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park: Stewart talked to Greg Cox we
would have to pursue funding and see what will come of it. Two potential projects
that are very similar and our window of opportunity has passed us by because of
all the changes on Yd Ave.
Recommendation: Not to pursue this effort and focus our attention on the other
project, Bay Front Park. Stewart motion to proceed with the Veterans Memorial at
Bay Front Park and abandon the Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park,
Wynne Second the motion, all in favor, yes.
c. Veteran Memorial at Bay Front Park: Need to get together with Jennifer to see
if the letter has been done. Vice Chair Sears will contact Jennifer and have her
send the letter to Claudia and for her to Broadcast letter as a draft to the rest of the
committee for approval.
d. Veterans Activities Report: Torres advised nobody got back to him from
American Legion, VFW and Elks Club. Stewart to give email address for Angel
Castillo at American Legion and Stewart will get a response from Elks and VFW.
Recommendation: Table topic for April meeting.
Staff Comments:
Capt. Sallee contacted the city clerk's office and they will be sending Kristine a letter clarifying
because she never called back. Kristine's term expires in June.
Commissioner Comments:
Anthony potentially leaving, will know in two weeks. Perez invited Jonathan White from SWC
to come speak to us next month, put on next month's agenda. SWC has a memorial garden
outside veteran's resource center and would like him to discuss all the activities they do for
veterans. Torres will coordinate with Capt. Sallee to drop off banners. Wynne recruit for
positions on the board. WWII Veteran's home being renovated, Councilman Diaz was extremely
helpful a fantastic with this event. Featured in American Legion Magazine.
