VETERANS ADVISORY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA
February 21, 2018
6:00 pm
A Regular Meeting of the Veterans Advisory Commission of the City of Chula Vista was called
to order at 6:02 pm in the Chula Vista Police Department, located at 315 Fourth Ave, Chula
Vista, California.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Commissioners Stewart, Torres, Wyiule, Perez Vice Chair Sears
and Chair Mueller
ABSENT: Commissioner Wunder
ALSO, PRESENT: Capt. Vern Sallee Staff Liaison, Claudia Bravo
1. Approval of Minutes
ACTION: Commissioner Stewart moved to approve minutes as written. Sears seconded
motion and it carried by the following vote: Yes: Torres, Wynne, and Perez,
Mueller.
ACTION ITEMS:
a. Chula Vista Veterans Park Brick Program update: Perez has sent an email
once a month and have not receive a response. Perez will call Friends of the Park
to get an update, currently they have not met. They are considering the financial
part and get back to us and Parks and Rec. Chair Mueller will also call Friends
and Park to see if she can get an update. Perez will aggressively go after them this
month for an update.
Recommendation: Table topic for next month's meeting.
b. Fallen Veteran Memorial at Memorial Park: Commissioner Stewart advised
no update was holding out for Kristine. Original concept was to create an
Archway so that you can see the flags through the Archway. Don't know if the
funding from county that was set aside for this is still there. Stewart will call
county for an update on the funds. Need a plan to be able to ask for funding.
Recommendation: Stewart advised giving it one more meeting and try to find
something and see if it is something we can pursue. If no update by next meeting
we will let it go.

c. Veteran Memorial at Bay Front Park: Regarding the letter to the city officials.
Mueller has that draft but it was never circulated. Will have the letter by next
month's meeting.
d. Fallen Heroes Banners at Chula Vista Mall: Banners will be stored at the
Chula Vista Police Department. Torres will confirm with the CV Mall again this
year and examine potential locations.
Recommendation: Table Topic for April Agenda
e. State of the American Veterans Program with USC in San Diego: Remove
f. Veteran of the Year 2018: Will begin promoting in May. Capt. Sallee will begin
promoting on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The publication Our Hometown
can promote it as well.
Recommendation: Table topic for May Agenda
g. Chula Vista Veterans Walk update: Strike it
h. Veterans Activities Report: There is no central place to get this information
unless you're a member. A good point of contact for VFW is Dan Bauer 619-392-
6333 he would know if there is anything going on. Ask to be put on the email for
members. Also contact Elks Lodge, Kim Coronado 619-240-0098 she does many
events of veterans.
i. Veteran's Legislative Report: Quarterly Report
Table topic on April Agenda
j. Facebook Inquiry: Rick Hopkins 619-397-6088 (Public Works) will be the point
of contact for this. Capt. Sallee will refer resident to the appropriate city
department.
Staff Comments:
None
Chair Comments: Mueller nothing. Sears would like to set a time table and goals. Discuss our
roles and functions to see if we are meeting the requirements of our charter. Consider Bylaws to
make sure we comply.
Commissioner Comments: Discuss a resolution regarding Kristine's absence from the meeting.
Capt. Sallee will follow up on this with the city.

ADJOURNMENT At 7:16 pm Chair Mueller adjourned the meeting to the next on March 21,
2018 in the Chula Vista Police Department, Community erence oom 315 4th Ave, Chula
