RECOMMENDATION: Council adopt the resolution. DISCUSSION: The Special Municipal Election was held on November 5, 2002, to select one (l) Mayor for a full term commencing in December 2002. The certified results of the November 5, 2002 election have now been received ITom the Registrar of Voters, and the results are as follows: Total Number of Registered Voters: 81,696 Total Number of Votes Cast: 37,144 (45.4%) Total Votes Percentage of Votes Cast Mayor Steve Padilla (run-off candidate) Mary Salas (run-off candidate) Petra E. I-I RESOLUTION NO. 2002- A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA RECITING THE FACT OF THE SPECIAL MUN1CIPAL ELECTION HELD IN SAID CITY ON NOVEMBER 5, 2002, DECLARING THE RESULTS THEREOF, AND SUCH OTHER MATTERS AS ARE PROVIDED BY LAW WHEREAS, a special municipal election was held and conducted in the City of Chula Vista, California, on Tuesday, November 5, 2002, as required by law, for the purpose of conducting a run-off election for the position of Mayor for a full term of four years; and WHEREAS, notice of said election was duly and regularly given in the time, form, and manner as provided by law; and in all respects said election was held and conducted, and the votes cast thereat received and canvassed, and the returns made and declared, in the time, form, and manner as required by the provisions of the Elections Code of the State of California for the holding of elections in charter cities; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 2002-224 adopted July 9, 2002, the election was consolidated with the Statewide general election, and the Registrar of Voters canvassed the returns of said election and has certified the results to this City Council. The results are received and made a part hereof, attached as Exhibit A. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CHULA VISTA does hereby resolve, declare, determine, and order as follows: SECTION I: There were 93 voting precincts established for the purpose of holding said election consisting of the regular election precincts in said City as established for the holding of state and county elections. SECTION 2. The whole number of votes cast in said City was 37,144. SECTION 3: The names of the run-off candidates for Mayor were: Steve Padilla and Mary Salas. SECTION 4: The name of the write-in candidate for Mayor was Petra E. Barajas. SECTION 5: The City Council does hereby declare Steve Padilla as elected to the office of Mayor, to be sworn into office at the first meeting of the City Council held in December 2002. SECTION 6: The number of votes given at each precinct, and the number of votes given in the City to each of the persons above named for Mayor, are as listed in Exhibit A, attached. /-;L SECTION 7: The City Clerk shall enter on the records of the City Council of the City of Chula Vista a statement of the results of the election, showing the whole number of votes cast in the City, the names of the persons voted for, for what office each person was voted for, and the number of votes given in the City to each person.
