The Alliance seeks to reduce food insecurity in San Diego County by raising awareness about food waste and an individual's ability to make a difference, and to connect food generators with food recovery agencies to create a lasting countywide food recovery network. The Alliance's efforts complement CalRecycle's mission and mandates, as well as offering an opportunity for jurisdictions in the San Diego area to benefit as well. Partnering with the campaign can help a jurisdiction provide businesses with options to reduce food waste and support the State's goal to recover 20%of edible food by 2025. One in seven people in California are food insecure. More than six million tons of food waste is landfilled in California each year, with approximately half a million tons from the San Diego area. Much of this is actually edible if captured earlier. The timing is right for the STFSD campaign to help your jurisdiction with the hunger issue,as well as divert edible food that is currently being disposed at the landfill. The Alliance's STFSD campaign will kick-off a consumer education component for residents and businesses across the county this fall. Being a partner in STFSD campaign would consist of: Sharing relevant quantitative and qualitative data with the Alliance about food waste generation and recovery. ➢ Messaging to residents and internal staff in a coordinated way using STFSD educational materials. ➢ Messaging to food waste generators about the STFSD partnership and recognition opportunities. ➢ Collaborating on resource and network building for food waste generators and food recovery agencies. The STFSD campaign is poised to assist your jurisdiction with the following: )o Conduct a broad consumer education campaign to raise awareness about the issue of food waste. Conduct outreach and education activities to encourage business food waste reduction and recovery. Facilitate peer-learning networks, metrics and recognition for businesses and institutions. ➢ Facilitate network building for edible food recovery and donation. Thank you very much for considering your staffs involvement in this effort. Their participation will help ensure its success. If you or your staff need more information on how collaboration with STFSD fits in with your mandatory organics recycling program, please contact our CalRecycle local Assistance staff: Charlene Graham at(916) 341-6733 or Fran Bean at 916- 341-6199. For questions about the STFSD campaign itself, please contact Barbara Hamilton, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Alliance(barbara@sdfsa.orF or 760-717-6627).
