APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Meeting of March 20, 2002 and May 22, 2002 MSUC (Pasqua/Hartman) to approve the minutes of the May 22, 2002 -minutes as distributed. Sufficient Trustees who had attended -the March '20, 2002 meeting were not available to approve these minutes. II. CONTINUED MATTERS A. Library Bond Act Grant Application Assistant Director, Paula Brown, reported that the State Library had received Chula Vista's grant application within the application period. Sixty-six applications were submitted for this first round of funding, ten of which were from San Diego County. The Library is awaiting to hear if its application meets completeness criteria. The State indicates that it will take 4 months to determine winning applications. III. NEW BUSINESS A. San Diego County Children and Families Commission Grant Trustees were asked to endorse the Library's application for Proposition 10 funding. The Chula Vista Elementary School District has applied for $970,476 for Fiscal year 2002-03 from the San Diego County Children and Families Commission. The School District would use the funds to produce the Parenting Readiness and Education Program (PREP) for children 0-5 and their parents. The District has approached the Chula Vista Library, South Bay Community Services and Home Start, Inc. to Library Board of Trustees -2- June 19, 2002 - partner with them. The library would be reimbursed up to $377,232 for services provided to the program. MSUC (Hartman/Pasqua) to endorse this grant application. B. California State Library "English Language and Literacy Intensive Program" Grant The Literacy Team has applied for a California. Library Services Act, English Language and Literacy Intensive Program grant of $108,000 from the California State Library to continue the "LEAP into Reading" tutoring program for third.to sixth graders. The South Chula Vista Library has partnered with Lauderbach Elementary School to teach library skills, on- line research and report writing skills to fourth through sixth grade students using a wireless computer lab. MSUC (Pasqua/Hartman) to endorse the California State Library English Language and Literacy Intensive Program Grant. C. Literacy Literacy Coordinator, Patrice O'Halloran shared a book, House of Miracles, that was written to help people understand the effect literacy and illiteracy has on individuals. Printing of this book was funded by the San Diego Council on Literacy.. IV. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Personnel Staff is currently being hired to provide an additional 8 hours of service weekly at the South Chula Vista Branch. New hours'will begin in July. The library will then be open Monday through Thursday 10:00 am until 8:00. pm, Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 6:00 pm and Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Fabiola. Mendiola has been hired as the new Volunteer Coordinator. She. has ha`d 7 years of customer service experience with Macys. Staff has long-awaited the filling of this vacancy. B. New Hours at South Chula Vista See "A" above Library Board of Trustees -3-.. June 19, 2002 C. "Grapes of Wrath" Grant The California Council for the Humanities is providing a grant opportunity in March for libraries to provide a program called. Reading the Grapes of Wrath in .which all Californian's would read the book, The Grapes -of Wrath. The purpose of this grant is to stimulate discussion about this book and draw parallels about other immigrant groups. Chula Vista Library has applied for this grant and received $1,000 to provide events in September and October. MSUC (Hartman/Pasqua).to endorse this grant D. Monthly Statistics Circulation this year has increased by 78,000 books. During the month of May alone, 4,000 more books were circulated than in that month last year. E. Legislative Update CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act) has been struck down'by a federal court in Philadelphia. Chula Vista Library had feared losing its E_ rate reimbursement because all internet. computers were not filtered. Chula Vista will continue to filter all children's.internet access. computers and allow adults to choose whether they will have filtered or unfiltered access when applying for their library cards. F.- Other The Summer Reading Program has begun, and is taking off well. To date, over 1600 children and 200 teens have enrolled. Principal Librarian Roeber reported that loan periods would be extended on some media to 28 days. The new loan periods would be:. 5 days for videos and DVD's 14 days for new books, magazines and test books 28 days for everything else This should make it less confusing for our patrons. Trustees were asked of their vacation plans and concurred not to meet in July. V. COMMUNICATIONS A. Friends B. Public Comments C. Written Comments D. Board Comments VI.
