IV. A. Summer Reading Program .
Introduction .of Young Adult Librarian Jorge Castillo and Children's Librarian Lisa Burgert were
made: A brief description of the themes "Paws, Claws & Animals" for the children's program
and °Creature Feature" for the teen program were given and Trustees were advised that this
Summer Reading Program 'signed up approximately 600 teens and 2400 children, a 25%
increase from last year. Lisa,Burgert advised that Children Librarians visited over a dozen
schools in the area promoting. the program and the Library to, over 6500 youth.. She also
mentioned that they had begun Story Time programs at Salt Creek, Veterans and Monte Valle
Recreation Centers and attendance at these programs was very good. Youth Librarian Jorge
Castillo advised that the teen group was a little harder to reach but the reading program had
50% more finishers than last, year and programs such as Computer Camp, -the Chess Club,
Teen Idol, and other_ Book Clubs were.beginning to bridge the gap. Assistant Director Brown
advised that the top children & youth readers, along with the winner of the Teen Idol program
would be presented to the Mayor and Council at a.meeting in September.
At this time, it was requested that Item IV -C Deleting Online Predators Act be moved in order for,
Public Service Manager Maureen Roeber to discuss it. Permission was granted..
IV. C. Deleting Online Predators Act
Maureen Roeber advised that the Library was in the process of rewriting the Internet Policy
because some of the areas in the present policy were confusing. One of the, big topics is
social networks (ie:: MySpace) and'whether or not they should be -blocked, filtered or removed
altogether. Once the City Attorney's Office reviews the revised policy, it would be presented
to Trustees for approval. At this time, Trustees advised they did not believe the Library
should make available sites such as MySpace to teens. Ms. Roeber advised she would relay
this information to Ramiro Gonzalez, Principal Librarian, who was the lead in revising the
policy
III. CONTINUED MATTERS
A. RANCHO DEL REY BRANCH PROJECT
Paula Brown distributed a revised picture of the RDR Library advising it was at the nearing
point of the construction phase. One significant change is that City Engineers have denied
access to a driveway on H Street; this change has been turned back over to the Engineering
Department asking them to come up with a solution to the traffic and driveway issue. Paula
went on to say that final layout for furniture had been completed and by the end of the week,
requests would go out to furniture vendors. She went on to say that the vendor for the
automated sorting machine was willing to work with us and the sorting machine would be
compatible with RFID.
