YOUNG; TRUSTEE J. BARNES AND E. MELLOR BOARD MEMBERS ABSENT: VICE -CHAIR A. RIGGS CITY STAFF PRESENT: LIBRARY DIRECTOR BETTY WAZNIS OTHERS PRESENT: CHERYL PEREZ, LADY'S AUXILIARY MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART; VIRGIL WHITEHEAD, ADJUTANT, MARINE CORPS LEAGUE; DAVID GEORGE, MARINE CORPS LEAGUE; AND DAVID BONAFEDE, ARTIST CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL Chair Young called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m. I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Chair Young and seconded by Trustee Mellor to approve the meeting minutes from May 15, 2013. Motion carried. II. NEW BUSINESS A. Election of Chair and Vice -Chair for FY 13-14 Nomination made by Trustee Mellor and seconded by Trustee Barnes to re-elect Brian Young as Chair. Motion carried. Nomination made by Chair Young and seconded by Trustee Mellor to elect Jeannie Barnes as Vice -Chair. Motion carried Chair Young recognized and expressed appreciation for Angela Riggs who served as Vice -Chair for FY -13. III. PRESENTATION A. Presentation of Fallen Heroes — Wall of Honor Exhibit Cheryl Perez presented a written statement prepared by Armida Martinez, a member of Gold Star Families for Peace (consists of people who have lost a member of their family in the Iraq War.) The group is proposing an exhibit at the Civic Center Branch Library to honor ten families with children who were killed in action. The fallen heroes all attended schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District. MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES The artist, David Bonafede presented samples of the art work — a series of panels which will be displayed in the Veterans' Wing of the Library. The Trustees inquired about the maintenance of the plaque and asked for a detailed sketch of the entire exhibit and wording to be displayed. Chair Young requested information on the City's Art Policy. Director Waznis informed the Board that the City's Art Policy is out-of-date and the City Council has to review the revised draft policy. Motion made by Chair Young and seconded by Vice -Chair Barnes to give preliminary support to the project as an enhancement of the Library Veterans' Wing, pending detailed sketch and wording of exhibit. The Board requested the information to be presented at the August meeting. IV. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. There is one vacancy on the Board due to the conclusion of term of James Balnis. The Mayor's office will be announcing the vacancy. Applicants must be a resident of Chula Vista and may not be employed by the City of Chula Vista. B. Two positions will be filled in the next few months (one full-time Librarian I and one 3/4 time Library Associate.) C. The City's FY13-14 Budget was approved by City Council on June 11th. The Library and Recreation Departments are separate departments, and the Library Director position has been reinstated. D. The Civic Center Branch conference room renovation is complete with the financial support from the Friends of the Chula Vista Library and grant funding, and the hard work of Eagle Scout Christopher MacMaster and Scouts in Troop 853. E. The Summer Reading Program, accompanied by the School Lunch Program, was a great success. F. The Library's Strategic Vision Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, September 12tt' from 9 am to 3 pm. G. The Chula Vista Garden Club received a grant from the CA Native Plant Society— San Diego, for aromatic plants in the "Fragrant Garden" at the South Chula Vista Branch Library. The Friends of the South CV Library will be purchasing patio furniture for the garden area. H. The Library has a new contract with the Heritage Museum Board. The Police _ Historical Association will be putting together the display this year. They will staff the museum with their volunteers. 2 MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES Through our association with the Rolling Readers, the Library was approached by Ashford University and the San Diego Padres to sponsor a "Padres Corner" for 30 days with a donation of $1,000. Padres' pitcher, Clayton Richard read to children at story time. We received a check from him personally for $1,500 after the event. J. The Otay Ranch Town Center has offered us the space previously occupied by Geppetto's Toy Store. The City and the mall will discuss the lease proposal. V. COMMUNICATIONS A. Board Comments \ 1) Trustee Mellor shared information on "Peach Jar', a website to help f� distribute e -flyers to schools & parents. VI. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned by Chair Young at 5:20 p.m. The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 3
