YOUNG; VICE -CHAIR J. BARNES; TRUSTEES E. MELLOR AND A. RIGGS NONE LIBRARY DIRECTOR BETTY WAZNIS TREASURY MANAGER TIFFANYALLEN Chair Young called the meeting to order at 4:09 p.m. I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Trustee Mellor and seconded by Vice -Chair Barnes to approve the meeting minutes from July 17, 2013. Motion carried. II. NEW BUSINESS A. Trustee Riggs announced that she is no longer a resident of Chula Vista and therefore will have to resign from the Board of Library Trustees. The Board & staff expressed appreciation for Trustee Rigg's service and support and wished her well. III. OLD BUSINESS A. Fallen Heroes Wall of Honor — Staff Report Update Director Waznis thanked the Board for their consideration to the Gold Star Families group's art exhibit proposal. The exhibit is being postponed to Memorial Day. IV. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. There are two vacancies on the Board of Library Trustees. The City is currently accepting applications online. Chair Young stated that he would like to encourage participation from college aged students to expand our diversity to the youth in the community. MINUTES � BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES B. The department has received 32 confirmations to -date for the Strategic Vision Workshop scheduled for September 12th. When the workshop is concluded, the community input will be incorporated with the Master Facilities Plan and presented to City Council. C. The Otay Ranch Mall has offered the Library additional space, previously occupied by Geppetto's Toy Store. The City is working out the details of how to use the space. The Library has put together a budget for the City Manager's consideration. However, we do not have sufficient funds to open and operate the space without additional staffing. The Library can use the space on a temporary basis as a community space for meeting and events, but will not be able to open full-time until the new fiscal year. D. The department has two new permanent staff members. The Library Associate (0.75 FTE) is a re -hire of an employee who was laid off, and a full-time Librarian I. E. American Association of Pediatricians (Reach Out and Read) and the Library have submitted a joint application for a grant to fund the Kindergarten Boot Camp year round. F. California Reads Grant selected the book "What It Is Like to Go to War" for this year's program. G. Target Corporation donated $2,000 to the Library to support our Literacy program. H. Possible Projects — Eagles Scouts & Revolution Landscape The Civic Center Library conference room renovation project was such a great success that the Boy Scouts want to help us with two possible projects. 1) Local History Room — collection needs to be secured in order to use the room as community space; and 2) Storytime Room — need built in benches, carpet & new paint Director Waznis bid on a landscaping certificate at the Living Coast Discovery Center fundraising event and is donating the certificate for $2,000 of landscaping service to the South Chula Vista Library. The City received a grant for the new Orange Avenue Park (adjacent to the South Chula Vista Library.) The Parks Department is working with the Library, Police, Recreation and Public Works Departments to design a manageable space. 0) MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES Director Waznis will participate in a group presentation "Hoarders — Library Edition" at the California Library Association Conference in Long Beach, November 3-5, 2013. K. The Friends of the Library is doing a Direct Mail Campaign. The Friends received a very generous donation of $50,000 from an elderly couple. L. The Police Historical Association is sponsoring this year's exhibit at the Heritage Museum. The new exhibit is scheduled to open to the public on Monday, Aug 26th V. COMMUNICATIONS A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library — No Report (Friends Executive Board meets every other month) B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation — Annual Meeting scheduled for Sept 10th C. Public Comments Tiffany Allen, Treasury Manager presented an update on the City's Master Fee Schedule as it relates to Library services and fees. The information presented to the Board at the June meeting is moving forward. Tiffany will inform the Board when the item goes to City Council. D. Written Comments — None E. Board Comments — Chair Young inquired whether the Mayor sends a "thank you" to members who separate from City Boards and Commissions. Director Waznis stated that she will contact the Mayor's Office. VI. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned by Chair Young at 5:21 p.m. The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 4:00 p.m.
