APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Vice -Chair Mellor and seconded by Chair Young to approve the meeting minutes from June 18, 2014. Motion carried (3-0). II. APPROVAL OF ABSENCE A. Motion made by Chair Young and seconded by Vice -Chair Mellor to approve Trustee Canedo's absence from the meeting of June 18, 2014. Motion carried (3-0). III. NEW BUSINESS A. Election of Chair for FY 14-15 Motion made by Vice -Chair Mellor and seconded by Trustee Canedo to re-elect Brian Young as Chair of the Board of Library Trustees for FY 14-15. Motion carried (3-0). B. Election of Vice -Chair for FY 14-15 Motion made by Chair Young and seconded by Trustee Canedo to re-elect Elva Mellor as Vice -Chair of the Board of Library Trustees for FY 14-15. Motion carried (3-0). IV. OLD BUSINESS A. Chair Young inquired about the status of the Board vacancy and requested an update at next month's meeting. MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT — Principal Librarian, Stephanie Loney provided the following updates on behalf of Director Waznis A. Summer Reading Program — 2,122 kids, 309 teens, and 297 adults enrolled in this year's program. 6,775 participants in the various events offered as part of the program. B. Free Lunch Program — Over 1,500 lunches & snacks were served during the 3 -week school intersession. C. Otay Ranch Expansion of "The Hub" — Progress is being made with the renovation of the new community space. Staff is working with architect to design space which will also accommodate the passport acceptance service. D. New Hourly Employees — The Department has hired 13 new hourly employees to fill the gaps in the schedule. As the economy is slowly recovering, staff is getting hired by other agencies which are providing more hours and/or benefits. E. South Chula Vista Library Planter — The Garden Club will adopt the planter area at the front of the entrance. The native plants from the Fragrant Garden will be clipped and replanted in the front. VI. COMMUNICATIONS A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library — None B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation — None C. Public Comments — None D. Written Comments — None E. Board Comments 1) Chair Young stated that he is on the City's Asset Management Program Advisory Committee and will be participating in the tour of the Library scheduled for next Thursday, 7/24. Stephanie stated that Library staff will be giving a 20 -minute presentation/tour of our facility to inform the committee about our programs and what we need to successfully run them. 2) Chair Young asked about the status of grants and partnerships of the Library. Stephanie reported that we are still working on the Chula Vista Charitable Foundation Grant and will be hosting another Civic Engagement Event in October at the Otay Ranch Library. Stephanie stated that we are applying for the Target Corporation grant again, and will use the funds to support the Kindergarten Boot Camp program at the Civic Center Library. 2 MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES 3) Chair Young asked about teen programs and/or outreach. Stephanie stated that we have many teens who volunteer to help with the Summer Reading Program registration and to help shelve books. 4) Chair Young asked about senior programs and/or outreach. Stephanie replied that we do not currently have any senior partnership programs scheduled. 5) Chair Young suggested the Board should organize an appreciation event for the Friends of the Library for their continued support, and requested this item be placed on next month's agenda for discussion. Stephanie stated she will contact Friends President, Shauna Stokes, to request their membership list. VII. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned by Chair Young at 4:54 p.m. The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library. gnu b vw+ ,enu h*, qj-c-"�f
