BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: TRUSTEE WILLIAM CANEDO, TRUSTEE MARYANN HERNANDEZ,
AND TRUSTEE STEPHEN KALALUHI
BOARD MEMBERS ABSENT: CHAIR BRIAN YOUNG AND VICE—CHAIR ELVA MELLOR

CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL
Acting -Chair Kalaluhi called the meeting to order at 4:08 p.m.
I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made Trustee Kalaluhi and seconded by Trustee Canedo to approve the
meeting minutes from September 17, 2014. Motion carried (3-0).
II. APPROVAL OF ABSENCE — NONE
III. OLD BUSINESS — NONE
IV. NEW BUSINESS — NONE
V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A. Ideas to Actions Event — October 20th @ 5:30 p.m. at The Hub (Otay Ranch Library)
Director Waznis reminded Trustees of the upcoming event. Mayor Cox,
Councilmember Salas and Councilmember Aguilar have rsvp'd to attend this event.
The City Clerk will create an Agenda for a Special Meeting of the City Council.
Facilitator training starts at 4:30 pm for anyone interested.
B. Zinio (e -magazines) Presentation at City Council Meeting — October 28th @ 2 p.m.
The new Zinio presentation will be made at the City's All Managers meeting on
October 6th, and the City Council meeting on October 28th.
C. Addressing the Homeless Population Council Workshop — November 6th @ 4 p.m.
This will be an opportunity for the community to have more informal conversations
(� with City Council regarding the homeless population.

D. School Intersession Lunch Program Update
The Civic Center Branch and the South Chula Vista Branch served a combined total
of 2,200 meals during this intersession. We will offer this service again during the
Spring break.
E. Civic Center Branch Library Renovations Update
The renovations have been completed in the Local History Room and the former
Passport Office. The Mayor has taken an interest in renovating the Children's
Storyhour Room. We will be getting new carpet, paint, window shades, hope
chests, sink and counter top. The two automatic doors will be replaced at the end of
the month. The doors have failed many times and are beyond repair.
Director Waznis invited the Trustees to a quick tour the rooms at the conclusion of
the meeting.
F. Possible Upgrade to Civic Center Library Parking Lot
We are applying for a grant to upgrade the parking lot to create a pedestrian
pathway from the corner of F Street and Garrett Avenue. It is currently difficult to
walk across the parking lot without dodging traffic.
G. One Book Family Activity at The Hub — November 5t' @ 4 pm
This is a kid -friendly event featuring Dorina Gilmore, author of Cora Cooks Pancit,
the children's companion to the 2014 One Book, One San Diego selection,
Monstress, by Lysley Tenorio. The author will give a brief talk and storytime,
followed by a Filipino cooking demo, craft activity, meet & greet, and snacks.
H. Mail Ballot Drop Off Program — Registrar of Voters selected both Civic and South as
drop off locations, starting October 27th.
Possible Joint Meeting with Chula Vista Public Library Foundation and Friends of
the Chula Vista Library
Director Waznis suggested a joint meeting for the groups to meet, share ideas, and
support each other.
Motion made Trustee Kalaluhi and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to request that
Chair Young reach out to the two groups to coordinate a joint meeting in the first
quarter of 2015. Motion carried (3-0).
J. Library Annual Report FY 2014-2015 will be available soon. It is currently being
printed.

VI. COMMUNICATIONS
A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library — (Next meeting is scheduled for 11/10 at 4 pm)
B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation
Trustee Kalaluhi stated that he had the opportunity to stand before City Council with
the fellow foundation board members to be recognized for the $50,000 donation to
help renovate The Hub at Otay Ranch Town Center. The foundation is already
starting to plan for the annual fundraiser, Bon Appetit. Next year's event will be held
on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Trustee Kalaluhi asked Trustee Hernandez if she would
assist with our marking efforts.
Trustee Hernandez replied that she would be happy to assist.

Meeting was adjourned by Acting Chair Kalaluhi at 4:44 p.m.
The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, November 19, 2014,
beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library.
