APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Vice -Chair Mellor and seconded by Chair Young to approve the meeting minutes from August 20, 2014. Motion carried (5-0). II. APPROVAL OF ABSENCE - NONE III. NEW BUSINESS A. Introduction of New Trustee — Maryann Hernandez Trustee Hernandez provided self -introduction, followed by introductions from other members and staff. IV. OLD BUSINESS A. Appreciation Event for the Friends Director Waznis informed the Board that The Friends' Annual Meeting is scheduled for January 25, 2015 and that would be a great opportunity to recognize The Friends. Director Waznis will request a "Special Order of the Day" for one of the January City Council meetings. The Trustees will have an opportunity to say a few words of appreciation at the meeting. Chair Young request informational report on the contributions made by The Friends (i.e. volunteer hours, financial donations, campaigns, etc.) MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Adult Literacy Awareness Month - The State Library is celebrating its 30th anniversary of the adult literacy program. Mayor Cox presented a proclamation at the September 9th City Council meeting. We currently have 60 students in our literacy program held at the South Chula Vista Branch. We have received $15,000 from the State to continue this service. B. The Hub — Renovations is progressing and soft opening is targeted for October 1St Grand Opening will coincide with Passport Acceptance Services in November. The continuation of the civic engagement conversation is scheduled for October 20th in the new space. C. Kindergarten Boot Camp — Over 200 children have completed this program at the South Chula Vista Branch. The program will continue at South and expand to the Civic Center Branch due to grants received from the Target Corporation and the Campaign for Grade Level Reading. D. Cox Cares "Teen Focus" Grant Application Pending — This is another example of how the Friends continue to support library services. They are applying for the grant to help build-up the teen a -book collection, and will be contributing matching funds. i f E. Study Room Renovation — Two new study/meeting rooms will be available soon. The Local History Room and the old passport office are being converted. F. Plans for Auditorium Upgrade — Possible funding available from the Public Education Fund to add audio/visual system, but funds cannot pay for renovations such as paint, carpet, seats, etc. We are continuing to explore other options to this much needed renovation. G. Library Position Upgrade — Scheduled for City Council approval on September 23rd Director Waznis thanked the Board for its support of this action. H. Orange Avenue Park — Construction approved by City Council on September 9th. The construction is expected to be completed by next summer. There will be a soccer field, tot lot, dog park, and other amenities. VI. COMMUNICATIONS A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library — The next Executive Board meeting is scheduled for November 10th at 4 p.m. B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation — Trustee Kalaluhi announced that he was voted onto the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Trustee Kalaluhi inquired whether the Foundation would be willing to help fund the auditorium renovations. Director Waznis stated that Trustee Kalaluhi should bring up that idea at the next Foundation meeting. 2 MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES C. Public Comments — None D. Written Comments — None E. Board Comments 1) Vice -Chair Mellor stated that here grandson, Michael, was very impressed with the Board during his visit at the August 2& meeting. 2) Trustee Canedo provided information from Blackie's Trophies and the draft letter of appreciation for the work performed at the South Chula Vista Branch entrance area. Motion made by Vice -Chair Mellor and seconded by Trustee Kalaluhi to approve the letter for signature by Chair Young. Motion carried (5-0). 3) Trustee Canedo shared that the Crossroads II will be meeting on the September 25th at 6 p.m. VII. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned by Chair Young at 5:22 p.m. The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library. �P__LOIAI 3
