V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A. Library Annual Report FY 2013-2014 — Copies of report distributed
B. Ideas to Actions Event - Mayor Cox kicked off event, with approximately 50
participants. The Library will send a Council Information Item memorandum in the
next couple of months to report on the community input. The Office of
Communications will present their rebranding ideas to Council at the same time.
C. One Book Family Activities at The Hub - Dorian Gilmore, author of Cora Cooks
Pancit, presented her book, along with a cooking demonstration. Barnes and Noble
sold her book and had she provided a book signing opportunity.
D. GMOC Questionnaire and Review - During the boom time, the role of the GMOC
was to make sure that services of the city kept up with the growth. Due to the lack
of funding, they are assessing whether the proper amount of money is being
collected from the new developments. We are 60,000 sq. ft. in the deficit of library
space, and the GMOC is supportive of library services. They will be meeting on
Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 6 pm.
E. Kindergarten Boot Camp — Sessions will be offered at Civic Center Branch
beginning in January.
F. Mail Ballot Drop Off Program — Over 1,000 ballots were submitted at our location,
making us the second highest drop-off location in the County.
G. Flu Clinic Sponsored by HHSA - Clinic was setup in Civic Center Branch parking lot,
and over 500 shots were given.
H. Living Coast Discovery Center Circulating Passes Have Launched — Family passes
are available (two adults/two children) for check out. Only 6 percent of visitors come
from Chula Vista, so we are helping them build their visitor base.
I. Pronunciator — The Library won the silent auction item at the CLA conference. This
on-line language learning program offers 80 languages including ESL. We received
a 2 -year subscription for $800. The retail value of the program is $5000.
Civic Center Branch Library Renovations
1) The Library is applying for a grant from the Chula Vista Charitable
Foundation to improve the pedestrian access of the parking lot.

BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
K. The Book Bug will be in the Third Avenue Holiday Parade and the Otay Ranch
Town Center Parade this year.
P. Public Computers — 44 out of 91 computers at Civic Center Branch and South Chula
Vista Branch are broken, and the rest are very slow. The City has the budget to
purchase computers, but lack computer technicians to get the machines set-up.
Our computer usage is down by 22%.
The Friends offered to help by paying for service, i.e., Geek Squad, but the City
does not want outside technicians working on our computers.
Chair Young requested more information on the data usage and stated that the
Board will be monitoring the situation to ensure improvement in the near future.
