V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A. Library's Rules of Conduct - We have had some issues of belongings stored on
Library property and by front door. The Library has been working with the City
Attorney's office and the Police Department. It was suggested that we firm up some
items on our Rules of Conduct and to post "No Trespassing" signs. Our goal is to
keep the appearance of our facility clean, safe and inviting. Staff will be bringing
back the policy for the Board's review.
B. The Chula Vista Heritage Museum — The Museum Board is a chapter of the Friends
of the Library. The Museum Board stepped up to keep it open the first year with
exhibit on Japanese history. The last couple of years have been exhibits from the
Retired Police Officers Association. The Memorandum of Understand (MOU) is
expiring on June 30th. The Museum Board reached out to the South Bay Historical
Society to join the group and help with future exhibits.
The City's goal is to remove the existing museum building and open up the park
-area. There may be a possibility for the museum exhibit to be relocated inside the
Civic Center Branch Library. The exhibit within our building will be opened the same
hours we are open to the public.

Vista Branch Library. They really like the Literacy Wing.
D. Two Exhibits
1) Remembering the Fallen — The traveling photo gallery will be in the Civic
Center Branch Library on May 0 and will be on display for two weeks.
Mayor Casillas Salas will be at the event to honor the 14 fallen from the
Southbay area. There will be 100 honor guards at the ceremony.
2) Harry Potter's World — The exhibit is from the Nation Library of Medicine. We
will also have a small display of the Kumeyaay Indians. The exhibit will open
on May 11th and be on display for six weeks.
E. Budget/Staffing Request — The Board requested a staffing plan in order to be
greater advocates for the Department. Staff will prepare something at the end of the
budget cycle. The positions for Otay Ranch Branch still seem possible. The
proposed budget will be presented to City Council in May. Trustees may want to
speak at City Council meeting or send a letter/email to Mayor and Council to support
the Library.
F. Status of Auditorium Renovation — The Mayor and City Managers will be meeting
conducting a walk-through of the auditorium. Funds have been identified for the
audio-visual equipment and lighting upgrades. We are still seeking funds for the
seating, carpet, paint & door. The cost for the miscellaneous upgrade is estimated
at $110, 000.
G. Opening of "The Hub" — Debrief — The Prezi presentation presented by Branch
Manager, Joy Whatley was shown to the Board. The passport acceptance office is
a success.
H. Princess Project — Gowns and accessories will be given away this weekend at the
South Chula Vista Branch. We had approximately 200 participants last year, and
expect the same this year.
Bilingual Book Collection Debut — May 5 — Over 3,000 English & Spanish books,
which are excellent learning tools for both adults and children, have been re -
cataloged. The books have been brought into one area for easier access.
J. 1,000 books before kindergarten — Studies have shown that from infancy to
kindergarten, if 1,000 books were read to the child before the child enters
kindergarten, it is an indicator for success. We will begin this program in June, with
incentive prizes.
K. Bon Appetit — May 2 — Please visit www.cvplfoundation.net for information on
vendors, concerts, etc.
