CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL
Vice -Chair Mellor called the meeting to order at 4:11 p.m.
I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to approve the
meeting minutes from March 8, 2016. Motion carried (3-0-1). Trustee Kalaluhi
abstained due to his absence from the March 8, 2016 meeting, and Chair Young was
not present yet.
II. APPROVAL OF ABSENCE
Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to approve the
absence of Trustee Kalaluhi for the March 8, 2016. Motion carried (3-0-1). Trustee
Kalaluhi abstained, and Chair Young was not present yet.
III. NEw BUSINESS - None
IV. OLD BUSINESS
A. Update on School District Partnerships
Vice -Chair Mellor stated that she met with Parent Liaison (Isela Hernandez) with the
CVESD and shared information about the Library.
B. Update on Thinkabit Lab
Vice -Chair Mellor stated that the Trustees shared information about the
Thinkabit Lab at the CVESD Parent Academy.

BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
Director Waznis provided a progress summary on the construction of the
multipurpose room. The doors and sprinklers for the room will be upgraded.
The Library is planning a grand opening at the end of July or beginning of
August. The MOU with CVESD will be presented to City Council for approval
at the June 21St meeting.
Principals from CVESD schools will be visiting the site on Friday, May 20 at 4
p.m. The planning/implementation team will be meeting on Tuesday, May 24
at 3 p.m. to continue discussions on logistics and equipment acquisition.
The Library is applying for another State grant next fiscal year. The grant will
be used to market the Thinkabit Lab and to create a professionally produced
video.
C. Update on CLA Day in the District
Director Waznis & Trustee Swanson met with Senator Hueso on April 22"d. Director
Waznis also met with Assemblymember Weber on April 22"d
�1 The meeting with Assemblymember Gonzalez is scheduled for Friday, May 20th at
3:15 p.m. Trustees are invited to attend.
V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A. Two new staff members will be joining the department - Tara Davies, full-time
Librarian 1/II and Laura Tamanaha, half-time Librarian 1/I1. These positions were
vacated by recent retirements.
B. SD Law Library representatives have been at the Civic Center Branch Library for
approximately three months. They have assisted more people at our site than they
had at the courthouse location for the last 18 months.
C. Wi-fi hotspots are being tested by staff. We have five available for patrons to
checkout for one-week periods. This new service will be rolled out in the next
several weeks. We are trying to find additional City funding to get more hotspots.
D. Princess Project helped over 110 girls acquire prom dresses & accessories.
E. Bon Appetit 2016 was the most successful event ever. The Chula Vista Public
Library Foundation made over $27,000. The CVPLF Board will meet on June le
and decide on funding support.
F. Civic Center Library's 40th Celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 8th from 3 p.m. to
8 p.m. The theme is "Back to the 70's" and activities will be at Library and at
Friendship Park. We will have gourmet food trucks here.

G. Library staff continues to work with Mayor's office and fundraising volunteer for the
proposed deck.
H. Sweetwater Authority is starting work on the well at the back lot of the Civic Center
Library. The well will be placed behind the slope between the lower level lot and
Friendship Park. The first step is to build a sound wall, which will take place for the
next three to six weeks.
Performing and Visual Arts Grant funds are a benefit from the City's lease of the
Sleep Train Amphitheater. A small portion of their ticket sales go toward the grant
awards. $76,000 is available this year, with application requests totaling almost
$200,000. The PVAG Task Force's proposed grants will be going to City Council for
approval on Tuesday, May 20.
J. City's FY 16-17 Budget is being prepared. The City requesting cuts from
departments. Our successful Passport Acceptance Program brought in unexpected
revenues and saved us from having to cut our budget.
The City Manager is proposing funds be allocated to address the homeless situation
throughout the city. The City Manager's budget will be presented to Council on May
24th. Council approval tentatively anticipated for June 14th
K. The lease at the Otay Ranch Town Center is expiring in 2017. The mall would like
to extend our lease for three years. City staff is currently discussing this option with
General Growth Properties.
There will be a space available for the library at the Millennia development.
However, the City will have to pay to construct the building. The City is thinking
about selling property and perhaps the sale from the proceeds could go toward the
building of the library at Millennia.
L. CENIC broadband project should be completed by the end of December. City staff
is continuing to work with State library on the system upgrade.
M. Career Online High School — The State library is providing three scholarships
($1500-$1800). We need to provide matching funds, in the amount of $1,095. We
will be looking for funding sources. Candidate must be at least 19 years old and
must be a Chula Vista resident.
N. The Police Department has reached out to us to provide literacy services for the
female inmates. They also asked for donations for books and magazines. Staff will
be working with the Police Department to come up with some programs.
O. CV Genealogy group will be hosting a family day event - doing a "Who do you think
you are?" starring Mayor Casillas-Salas.

E. Board Comments:
1) Trustee Swanson stated that she is preparing backpacks for students at
Feaster and Castle Park Elementary Schools. Will contact staff for Library
information (flyers & brochures) and calendars.
2) Vice -Chair Mellor suggested a "thank you" letter for City Council and City
Manager for supporting the Thinkabit Lab. She will draft a letter for Chair
Young's signature.
3) Trustee Hernandez commended Director Waznis and staff for their
enthusiasm on all the great Library programs and projects.
VII. ADJOURNMENT
Meeting was adjourned by Chair Young at 5:21 p.m.
The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, June 15, 2016,
beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library.
