CHULA VISTA BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES CHULAVISTA OCTOBER 19, 2016 SOUTH CHULA VISTA BRANCH LIBRARY 4:00 PM 389 ORANGE AVENUE, CHULA VISTA, CA 91911 BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: VICE -CHAIR ELVA MELLOR, TRUSTEE MARYANN HERNANDEZ, AND TRUSTEE MAYRA SWANSON BOARD MEMBERS ABSENT: CHAIR BRIAN YOUNG CITY STAFF PRESENT: LIBRARY DIRECTOR BETTY WAZNIS, AND BOARD SECRETARY YEELIN CHEUNG PUBLIC PRESENT: N/A CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL Vice -Chair Mellor called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to approve the meeting minutes from July 20, 2016. Motion carried (3-0). 11. .APPROVAL OF ABSENCE Motion made by Trustee Hernandez and seconded by Vice -Chair Mellor to approve the absences of Trustee Kalaluhi and Trustee Swanson from the meeting of July 20, 2016. Motion carried (3-0). III. NEW BUSINESS A. Otay Ranch Town Center Lease Extension — Staff report on City Council agenda for November 15, 2016 meeting. The extension will be effective through April 2020. The Board expressed concerns that the east side of the city has had a temporary library for the past 22 years. The Board hopes the city will continue to move forward to look for a permanent location for the library at the Millenia project and Rancho del Rey. Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to support the lease extension of the Otay Ranch Library annex and the community space known as "The Hub". Motion carried (3-0). MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES IV. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on School District Partnerships — No report B. Update on "Thinkabit" Lab (Innovation Station) Vice -Chair Mellor stated that she plans on visiting when Hedenkamp Elementary School does class trip. C. Joint Meeting with Friends Executive Board and Foundation Members The Board requested Director Waznis to contact the Friends Executive Board and the Chula Vista Public Library Foundation to schedule the joint meeting after January 2017. V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. The Community Open House of the Innovation Station was held on October 7th Approximately 170 attendees of all ages participated. In order to accommodate additional classes, the Chula Vista Elementary School District added Friday sessions. The Innovation Station will be the presentation topic at the First Friday Breakfast on November 4th. Matt Tessier & Vanessa Myers with CVESD, Susie Armstrong with Qualcomm, and Erni Barros with the Library will be the presenters. B. Career Online High School — Accredited high school and career certificate program funded by the State Library. The library has been awarded three scholarships and will match it with three additional scholarships ($1,095 each). Dr. Stephen Kalaluhi will sponsor one and the Friends of the Library will sponsor two. C. Homeless Outreach Team — Progress is being_ made the team and Friendship Park is looking better. D. The Heritage Museum is planning_ exhibits on Rohr Industries for 2017 and Hispanic Heritage for 2018. VI. COMMUNICATIONS A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library - None B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation — Annual fundraising event, Bon Appetit, is scheduled for April 29, 2017. The Foundation is planning on returning to the Otay Ranch Town Center. The mall is willing to pay the additional fee for the extra insurance coverage. 2 MINUTES BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES C. Public Comments - None D. Written Comments — None E. Board Comments — Trustee Kalaluhi submitted his written letter of resignation. VII. ADJOURNMENT Vice -Chair Mellor adjourned the meeting at 5:00 p.m. The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library. 3
