APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Vice -Chair Mellor and seconded by Trustee Swanson to approve the meeting minutes from June 21, 2017. Motion carried (5-0). II. APPROVAL OF ABSENCE(S) - NONE III. NEW BUSINESS A. Election of Chair for FY 2017-18 Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to re-elect Brian Young as Chair of the Board of Library Trustees for FY 2017-18. Motion carried (5-0). B. Election of Vice -Chair for FY 2017-18 Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Trustee Hernandez to re-elect Elva Mellor as Vice -Chair of the Board of Library Trustees for FY 2017-18. Motion carried (5-0). IV. OLD BUSINESS - NONE ^` BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Director Waznis informed the Board that she will be on a leave of absence from August 2nd through September. During that period of time, Joy Whatley will be Interim Library Director. B. City Budget Update: 1) Two vacant positions (full-time Librarian & half-time Library Associate) have been frozen, pending results of the SAFER grant for the Fire Department to hire 12 full-time fire fighters. 2) The Recreation Director position was eliminated. C. REAL Cards have been distributed to CVESD for Kindergarten and First Grade students. We will have a Library Card parry at each of the three branches in September. D. Library Staff will be presenting at the Council Meeting of July 25th. Our new/summer programs and initiatives will be under the "Special Orders of.the Day". E. SDG&E Smart City Mural ribbon cutting event is scheduled for August 16th — 4 to 6 pm. F. Public restrooms (all three sets) in upper level of Civic Center Library will be renovated as part of Measure P. G. Grant Programs: 1) Library received grant from California State Library and the Mental Health Initiative to provide Mental Health First Aid to staff and to have an on-site Mental Health Worker for 24 hours per week at Civic and South to serve the community. 2) Library received grant from California Humanities for "Exploring New Ways of Engaging Immigrant Communities". Library will be partnering with New Americans Museum and KPBS "My First Day" podcast and "Facing North" film producer to hest an event in October. VI. COMMUNICATIONS A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library - None B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation — None C. Public Comments — None 2 BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES D. Written Comments — None E. Board Comments 1) Chair Young stated that he attended the Mayor's Boards & Commissions Recognition event; also in attendance were Vice -Chair Mellor and Trustee Swanson. 2) Chair Young informed staff that he was very impressed with the number of creative projects being offered to the community, and it was a pleasure for him to be on the Board to support staff's efforts. VII. ADJOURNMENT Chair Young adjourned the meeting at 4:59 p.m. The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library. 3
