Chair Young called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.
I. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Vice -Chair Mellor to approve the
meeting minutes from March 14, 2017. Motion carried (5-0).
II. APPROVAL OF ABSENCE(S)
Motion made by Chair Young and seconded by Vice -Chair Mellor to approve the
absences of Trustee Hernandez and Trustee Loaiza from the meeting of March 14,
2017. Motion carried (5-0).
III. NEW BUSINESS
A. FY 2016-17 Annual Activity Report
Board discussed and revised activities report and added a recommendation under
"comments to Council". Motion made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Vice -
Chair Mellor to approve the activities report (see attached). Motion carried (5-0).
B. FY 2016-17 Annual Attendance Report
Board reviewed attendance report and no corrections were requested. Motion
made by Trustee Swanson and seconded by Vice -Chair Mellor to approve the
attendance report (see attached). Motion carried (5-0).

IV. OLD BUSINESS - N/A
V. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A. FY 17-18 Budget passed by City Council.
The City Manager was initially directed by City Council to come back with a $2
million cut, in order to supplement the Fire Department budget. Approximately 20
positions were put on the cut -list. However, no cuts were implemented. The Fire
Department is hopeful to receive a Safer Grant. All vacant positions are frozen at
this time.
The Library currently has one full-time Librarian 1/II vacancy and -one half-time
Library Associate vacancy. The department is waiting for approval to fill these
positions.
B. T.U.T. funding has been exhausted. The department has been using T.U.T. funds
to purchase books. We were fortunate to receive $200,000 the last three fiscal
years (FY15 - $67,000, FY16 — $66,500, and FY17 - $66,500). We will not have
any T.U.T. funding for FY18.
C. The Library will be presenting our Summer Initiative Programs to the City Council on
July 25th under "Special Orders of the Day".
D. The restrooms at Civic will be renovated with Measure P funding. The set of
restrooms in the exterior lobby will start this summer. The other set of restrooms in
the main area will be completed by the end of the year.
The City's Facilities Manager will conduct a walk-through of Civic and South to
determine the required infrastructure projects.
E. Library cards will be in the back -to -school packets for K & 1St grade students to help
promote early literacy. All three branches will be a library card party in September.
We will raffle 15" bikes (donated by the Chula Vista Rotary).
F. Director Waznis shared the promotional video of the Innovation Station (funded by
CA State Library grant). Staff will present the video to'City Council on July 25th, and
will present at this year's California Library Association's annual conference in
November.
G. SDG&E has adopted the staircase and lower level hallway leading to the Innovation
Station. There will be mural and interaction displays. Director Waznis showed the
news segment by Joe Little, Channel 10 News, announcing this new partnership.
H. The Heritage Museum 2018 exhibit will highlight the Latino History of South Bay,
with stories and artifacts.

BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
I. The Library has received several grants:
• California State Library Mental Health Initiative will fund a mental health worker
to assist patrons at Civic &.South through August (up to $8,000)
• Nasa @ Your Library — Library will receive 1000 glasses to view eclipse on
August 21 st, and funding for STEM kits
• SDG&E Fuse (Future Unstoppable Scientists Emerge) — a STEM program that
connects the Chula Vista youth community to careers in Energy Science
• LSTA — 3rd year of funding for program "Full STEAM Ahead" — to fund
afterschool and summer camps
VI. COMMUNICATIONS
A. Friends of the Chula Vista Library - None
B. Chula Vista Public Library Foundation —Annual fundraising event "Bon Appetit" was
very successful — over $30,000 in proceeds

Chair Young adjourned the meeting at 5:16 p.m.
The next Board of Library Trustees meeting will be on Wednesday, July 19, 2017,
beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Branch Library.
