Meeting Minutes

• Chair Gore called the meeting to order at 5:03 p.m.
II. Approval of Minutes
Motion made by Commissioner Kulikowski and seconded by Commissioner
Paguio to approve the minutes from the meeting of May 13, 2013. Motion
carried.
III. New Business
A. Stephanie thanked Mr. Gore for serving as Chairperson for FY 12-13.
Nomination made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner
Kulikowski to elect Christine Moore as Chair for FY 13-14. Motion carried
6-0-1 (Harris abstained)
Nomination made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner
Moore to elect Jason Paguio as Vice -Chair for FY 13-14. Motion carried
6-0-1 (Harris abstained)
IV. Staff Report
A. Performing and Visual Arts Grant Awards Update
• Stephanie reported that City Council approved awards at the June 4tn
meeting, and all checks have been mailed to the recipients.
B. Gayle McCandliss Awards Update
• Stephanie stated that all five students have confirmed their availability to
attend the August 6th City Council meeting to receive the "Rising Star'
awards.
Neisha Hernandez, "Bravo" award recipient, is not available on August 6th
She will be recognized at the August 13th City Council meeting.
Chair Moore stated that Councilmember Bensoussan joined her at the
Hilltop High School presentation to Elena Aguilar.
C. New Veterans Wing Exhibit in Cooperation with the Veterans Commission
The Gold Star Families for Peace, (consists of people who have lost a
member of their family in the Iraq War), is working with the City's
Veterans' Commission to create an exhibit to be displayed at the Civic
Center Branch Library. The art display will include a series of panels
honoring ten families with children who were killed in action. The fallen
heroes all attended schools in the Sweetwater Union High School District.
The group will be presenting their ideas to the Commission at the
September meeting. The Library is amicable to the project as long as it is
not a permanent exhibit.
SD. Arts Incubator
Stephanie stated that Councilmember Salas expressed interest in creating
a facility for local artists.
Chair Moore stated that there is a similar facility in downtown San Diego
(K & 16th Streets).
V. Public Comments/Communications
A. Commissioner Gore reported that he attended the La Jolla Playhouse
event. Commissioners J. Rodriguez & Harris were also present.
B. Commissioner Gore offered to buy nametags for commissioners who want
one.
C. Chair Moore inquired whether there are any vacancies on the commission.
Stephanie replied that Commissioner Anitza Rodriguez may be leaving the
commissioner and will verify with the Mayor's office.
D. Commissioner Gore stated that he had a conversation with Vice -Chair
Paguio regarding the donation of musical instruments to students by our
• community members.
Vice -Chair Paguio thinks local businesses might be interested in donating
money and/or instruments. He suggested looking into acquiring old
military band instruments.
Commissioner Harris stated that the military cannot sell old instruments to
schools. All musical instruments that are old and no longer serviceable go
to the Defense Reutilization & Marketing Office (DRMO). Items go to
other governmental agencies or to auction. Commissioner Harris
suggested information be provided to the schools and they can request it
directly from the DRMO.
Chair Moore suggested a musical instruments ad-hoc committee.
Commissioners Gore, Harris and Paguio volunteered to work together to
create a resource sheet for schools on how to acquire instruments.
Chair Moore requested to an update at the September meeting.
VII. Adjournment
Meeting was adjourned at 5:44 p.m. by Chair Moore.
The next meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for Monday,
• September 9, 2013 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library, located at
365 F Street, Chula Vista.
