HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-05-12 CAC MINS• CITY OF CHUTA VISTA CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Meeting Minutes Monday, May 12, 2014 Civic Center Branch Library 5:00 pm Conference Room Commissioners Present: Chair Christine Moore; Vice -Chair Jason Paguio (arrived at 5:07 pm), Commissioners Al Gore, Willie Harris, Kirin Macapugay, Jennifer Rodriguez, and Emmanuel Soto (arrived at 5:14 pm) Commissioners Absent: City Staff Present: None Staff Liaison Stephanie Loney Others Present: Anne Steinberger, Marketing & Communications Director Olga Berdial, Communications Coordinator Betsy Keller, President of OnStage Playhouse Call to Order / Roll Call Chair Moore called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes Motion made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner Rodriguez to approve the minutes from the meeting of April 14, 2014. Motion carried (5-0) - Paguio & Soto not present yet. III. Approval of Absences - None IV New Business A. 2014 Gayle McCandliss Awards — Late Entry Staff Liaison Loney informed the Commission that she received a late entry. Stephanie asked if the Commission would like to review and accept this entry since funds are still available and the Commission was concerned with the lack of nominations submitted. Chair Moore asked if staff knew the reason for the late entry. • Stephanie responded that the deadline of April 1St was selected arbitrarily based on previous years. The Commission has the discretion to accept, review and award funds before the end of the fiscal year. Motion made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner Harris to accept the nomination and award $250. Motion carried (6-0) - Soto not present yet. V. Old Business A. Chair Moore inquired about the status of the two vacant positions. Staff Liaison Loney did not have any update on the vacancies. Commissioner Macapugay stated that she knows one person who submitted an application. Commissioner Paguio also stated that he knows one per who submitted an application. Chair Moore stated that if there was no progress to fill the vacancies by the next meeting on recruiting new members, the Commission will re -visit the possibility of reducing the number of Commissioners. VI. Staff Report A. Draft Arts Master Plan Update Commissioner Gore asked if there was anything the Commission can do to help with the project. Staff Liaison Loney stated that Commissioners are welcome to submit comments. The department has an intern working on updating the document. B. 2014 Performing and Visual Arts Grant Update The PVAG Task Force selected recipients and amounts to award. The report will be brought to City Council on May 20th for approval. C. Social Media Communications — Anne Steinberger, Marketing & Communications Manager & Olga Berdial, Communications Coordinator discussed suggestions to help the Commissioners communicate with the public with the most impact. Anne stated that the City has been using Twitter for a little over two years, and they could add the Cultural Arts Commission activities to the City account. The City has 1,800+ followers on Twitter and approximately 1,800 contacts on Facebook. Anne informed the Commission to feed information through Stephanie or directly to Olga oberdiaKED-chulavistaca.gov, with hashtag CVArts. 4 Chair Moore reminded the Commissioners to make sure their comments and tweets are in line with arts information. • D. This year's Summer Reading Program (SRP), "Paws to Read" will have an art competition event. Stephanie suggested the Cultural Arts Commission be judges. The SRP starts ends June 6th and ends July 19th. The Commission can review the entries at the July Meeting. Commissioner Harris expressed concerns over the high volume of entries and the Commission may not be able to review all of them. Stephanie stated that staff can weed out the entries and select the top ten in each category to forward to the Commission. Stephanie will bring back more information at the June meeting. VII. Public Comments/Communications A. Betsy Keller (betsykeller(a-)_hotmail.com) - distributed copies OnStage Playhouse 2014-2015 season schedules and invited the Commission to visit. Betsy stated that she was disappointed that the Commission does not go to the one live theater in the City, and encouraged everyone to use their passion for cultural arts to support the arts. Chair Moore thanked Betsy for her comments, and encouraged • Commissioners to stress the need for the arts to our electives. Commissioner Gore stated that the individuals on the Commission are totally dedicated for the arts and will help get information out to the community. Vice -Chair Paguio agreed that the Commission needs to be more resourceful and communicate with elective officials. Anne stated that the City has a calendar of events on the website, and the media does look at the calendar. Community members have the ability to add events on the City's calendar and encouraged Betsy and the Commission to use it to promote their events. VIII. Adjournment Meeting was adjourned at 5:51 p.m. by Vice -Chair Paguio (Chair Moore left at 5:44 pm). The next meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for Monday, June 9, 2014 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library, located at 365 F Street, Chula Vista. 3 IIt4A '..lid -1'
