HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-06-09 CAC MINSPW CITY OF CHULA VISTA CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Meeting Minutes Monday, June 9, 2014 Civic Center Branch Library 5:00 pm Conference Room Commissioners Present: Chair Christine Moore; Vice -Chair Jason Paguio; Commissioners Al Gore, Willie Harris (arrived at 5:21 pm), Kirin Macapugay, Jennifer Rodriguez (arrived at 5:29 pm) Commissioners Absent: Commissioner Emmanuel Soto City Staff Present: Staff Liaison Stephanie Loney Others Present: Alan Ziter and John Highkin, Co -Founders of San Diego Regional Arts & Culture Coalition (SDRACC); and Betsy Keller, OnStage Playhouse I. Call to Order/ Roll Call Chair Moore called the meeting to order at 5:03 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes Motion made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner Paguio to approve the minutes from the meeting of May 12, 2014. Motion carried (4-0) — Harris & Rodriguez not present yet & Soto absent. III. Approval of Absences - None IV New Business A. FY 13-14 Commission Activities Report and Attendance Report Commissioners discussed draft activities report. Chair Moore suggested adding the approval of the Performing and Visual Arts Grants. Commissioner Gore suggested adding cultural events attended by the Commission. Stephanie took notes on events attended; and suggested that in the future, commissioners report out at monthly meetings if they participated at an event. B. San Diego Regional Arts & Culture Coalition (SDRACC) — Alan Ziter and John Highkin, Co -Founders Mr. Ziter and Mr. Highkin presented information about the San Diego Regional Arts & Culture Coalition (see attachment.) The Commission discussed reaching out to other arts & culture organizations throughout the City. Mr. Ziter stated he would be happy to discuss this topic further with the Commission. Chair Moore asked Stephanie to look into inviting the mayoral/council candidates to a Cultural Arts Commission meeting. V. Old Business A. Chair Moore stated that she reached out to Hilltop High School regarding the Gayle McCandliss "Rising Star" award and they agreed to have her present at their scholarship ceremony. However, the school forgot to notify her of the date/time of the ceremony. VI. Staff Report A. Draft Arts Masters Plan — Stephanie will meeting with Geographic Information Manager to request update of four maps included in the plan. • B. 2014 Performing and Visual Arts Grant — The grant recipients were approved by the City Council on May 12tH • C. New Commissioners — The Mayor has appointed two new commissioners. They will be joining the group next month. D. McCandliss "Rising Star" — Awards will be presented at the August 12th City Council Meeting. E. Summer Reading Program Art Contest - Staff will pre judge entries and will present no more than 40 items to the Commission at next month's meeting. VII. Public Comments/Communications A. Betsy Keller stated that it was her understanding the City has hired an outside organization to coordinate the Harborfest event. Chair Moore stated that Councilmember Bensoussan will be spearheading the committee, and invited Commissioners to participate on the committee. Vice -Chair Paguio stated that he has been invited to participate on the event planning steering committee. 0) VIII. Adjournment • Meeting was adjourned at 6:23 p.m. by Chair Moore • • The next meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for Monday, July 14, 2014 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library, located at 365 F Street, Chula Vista. 3
