HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-08-11 CAC MINS1 0 • • MY OF CHULA VISTA CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Meeting Minutes Monday, August 11, 2014 Civic Center Branch Library 5:00 pm Conference Room Commissioners Present: Chair Christine Moore; Commissioners Crystal Alonso, Melissa Baldwin, Al Gore, and Jennifer Rodriguez Commissioners Absent: Commissioners Jason Paguio, Kirin Macapugay, and Emmanuel Soto City Staff Present: Staff Liaison Stephanie Loney Others Present: Winners of the Summer Reading Program Art Contest: Karina Velasco — Adult Grand Prize Sophia Nazur — Children's Grand Prize Benito Delgado — Children's Runner Up Candela Velasco — Children's Runner Up Call to Order/ Roll Call Chair Moore called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. II. Special Presentation Winners of the Summer Reading Program Art Contest were recognized by the Cultural Arts Commission. III. Approval of Minutes Motion made by Commissioner Rodriguez and seconded by Commissioner Gore to approve the minutes from the meeting of June 9, 2014. Motion carried (5-0). IV. Approval of Absences A. Motion made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner Rodriguez to approve the absence of Commissioner Soto from the June 9, 2104 meeting. Motion carried (5-0). V. New Business rA. Introduction of New Commissioners 1) Crystal Alonso 2) Melissa Baldwin Chair Moore welcomed the new Commissioners. Commissioners Alonso and Baldwin presented brief self -introductions. B. Election of Chair for FY 14-15 Motion made by Commissioner Gore and seconded by Commissioner Rodriguez to re-elect Chair Moore as Chair for FY -15. Motion carried (5-0). C. Election of Vice -Chair for FY 14-15 Commissioner Gore nominated Paguio, no second Commissioner Baldwin self -nominated, seconded by Chair Moore Commissioner Alonso self -nominated, no second Motion made by Commissioner Baldwin and seconded by Chair Moore to elect Melissa Baldwin as Vice -Chair for FY -15. Motion carried (5-0). D. Selection of Commissioners to present Gayle McCandliss Award at August 12th City Council Meeting. Two students will be awarded $2501each for the Rising Star Award. Chair Moore, Commissioners Alonso and Gore will present awards. VI. Old Business A. City Social Media Program Update — Anne Steinberger, Marketing & Communications Manager (Anne not available — rescheduled to October). Chair Moore requested all Commissioners to send social media sign-in/log-in names to Stephanie to add to roster. VII. Staff Report A. One Vacancy — Mr. Harris opted not to accept second term. Please refer all interested individuals to City website and apply online. 2 Vlll. Public Comments/Communications A. Chair Moore stated that she attended a performance at OnStage Playhouse 0 and encouraged all Commissioners to attend. Chair Moore informed the Commission that she participated in the committee which awarded $50,000 to help fund the HarborFest on August 16tH B. Commissioner Gore stated that he met the Commander of the USS Midway and would like to explore having an event there. Commissioner Gore suggested contacting some artists who attended Comic Con and determine if they are interested in displaying their work at the Courthouse. Chair Moore requested Commissioner Gore to follow-up on the idea and report back at the next meeting. Commissioner Gore generously volunteered to purchase name tags for the new Commissioners. C. Commissioner Baldwin stated that she would like to help the Commission get more public exposure. Commissioner Baldwin suggested reaching out to Tommy Sablan, local radio announcer, to host an event to bridge the gap between the east side and the west side of the City. Stephanie reminded the Commission that they can apply for the Performing and Visual Arts Grant to help fund an event. Chair Moore requested item be placed on the agenda for the next meeting — Possible Ideas for PVAG Submission. IX. Adjournment • Meeting was adjourned at 6:09 p.m. by Chair Moore. The next meeting of the Cultural Arts Commission is scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2014 at 5:00 pm at the Civic Center Branch Library, located at 365 F Street, Chula Vista. 0
