MINUTES OF THE
REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.
November 12, 1996

MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Pelayo, Commissioners Russell, Salgado,
Scott, Souval and Wheeland
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Cernitz, McAllister, and
Virchis
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Salgado/Souval) 6-0 to approve
minutes of October 8, 1996.
2. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Action
a. Executive Committee Goals & Objectives
The Executive Committee met and developed short term
goals for the Cultural Arts Commission. The list was
distributed to the Commissioners for their review. The
goals and objectives were sent to all the Commissioners
for their review and comments. MSC (Wheeland/Scott) 6-
0 to accept the Commission's goals and objectives.
MSC (Souval/Scott) 6-0 to plan a retreat in the month
of January 1997 focusing on short term goals. The
Commissioners requested Cultural Arts Coordinator Todd
conduct and coordinate the retreat.
b. Involvement in EXPO 197 - The Expo 97 is scheduled for
April 12, 1997. The Classical Musical Festival is
scheduled for May 17, 1997. The Commission agreed a
Cultural Arts Commission brochure should be designed
and available for display. MSC (Souval/Salgado) 6-0 to
further discuss and define the Commission's role in
connection with EXPO 197.

3. NEW BUSINESS
ACTION - Benefit Theater Production - Southwestern College -
Dr. Russell announced two major productions are scheduled
for next year. The Spring 1997 production is scheduled for
March 1997. The performance is "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".
This could be a benefit performance for the Gayle McCandliss
Memorial Fund. The Commission would be responsible for a
special informational mailing. MSC (Souval/Scott) 6-0 to
follow through with the entire Commission's participation.
NON -ACTION - None
4. SUB -COMMITTEE REPORTS - The Port Art Project has been
postponed.
5. STAFF REPORT - None
6. COMMUNICATIONS
a. Oral Communications - None
b. Written Communications - None
C. Commissioners' Remarks - Chair Pelayo announced the
resignation of Commissioner Melody Cernitz. The City
Clerk's office will be notified to proceed with posting
a vacancy notice.
Meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m. to the next regularly scheduled
meeting of December 10, 1996 at 5:00 p.m.
