REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.
June 10, 1997
CALL MEETING TO ORDER

MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Pelayo, Commissioners Kelly, Salgado,
Scott, Souval, Virchis, and Wheeland
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners McAllister and Russell
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison Gates, McMartin and Todd
1. Approval of Minutes - MSC (Virchis/Wheeland) 7-0 to approve
the minutes of May 13, 1997.
2. Unfinished Business -
Action
McCandliss Art Awards - The policy and past history of the
annual arts awards were distributed. Commissioners Souval
and Scott agreed to assist in the development of the annual
awards.
Non -Action - None
3. New Business
Action - Election for 1997-98 Commission Officers
MSC (Souval/Scott) 7-0 to appoint Bill Virchis to the office
of Chair. Commissioners Salgado and Wheeland were nominated
for the position of Vice Chair. By written vote, Lee
Wheeland will serve in the position of 97-98 Vice Chair.
Non -Action - None
4. Sub -Committee Reports -
The Music Festival held on May 17 was a success. There were
113 entries. Sub -Committee Chair Scott thanked Nora
McMartin for all her help. The balance of the Festival Fund
is $976 which can rollover to next year's event.

5. Staff Report -
The position of Cultural Arts Coordinator has now been
budgeted to a full-time position.
The schedule for the Music in the Park Summer Concert Series
was distributed. The concert events are scheduled for
Sundays at 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Bowl.
The City has applied for County Enhancement Funds to be used
for cultural arts programs.
On June 4, staff made a presentation to the Port Art
Committee on the proposed Bayfront Park site.
The Port District has scheduled a Public Art Exhibition
Seminar for June 9 at the Lindbergh Field.
The Sunset Cinema Visual Arts Foundation is scheduling
summer movies at Rohr Park and the Bayfront.
6. Communications

C. Commissioner's Remarks -
The Commissioners agreed to plan a workshop to discuss
the development of the proposed art selection policy.
Mr. Virchis will contact the Commissioners for their
availability to schedule a workshop.
Channel 10 will be filming events taking place on
Thursdays during the summer. The Third Avenue Farmers
Market was suggested.
Mr. Virchis announced auditions are scheduled for July
8 and July 9 for a joint multi-ethnic performance with
the San Diego Repertory Theatre of "loot Suit".
Chair Pelayo thanked the Commissioners for their help
in assisting him during his 1996-97 Cultural Arts
Commission Chair term.
The meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. to the regular scheduled
meeting on July 15, 1997 at 5:00 p.m.
