HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-10-12 CAC MINSi • • MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. October 12, 1998 CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL Conference Room #1 Civic Center Library MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Clement, Flach, Russell and Virchis MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Curd and Molina STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin and Palmer 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Flach\Russell) 5-0 to approve the minutes of August 10, 1998. 2. OLD BUSINESS - a. Comments on Public Art Policy - Any additions or comments should be submitted to Mr. Todd by the end of October. b. Backstage Tour of Coors AmphiTheater - The Annual Boards/Commissions Luncheon Banquet is scheduled for October 17, 1998 at the Coors AmphiTheater. A backstage tour is pending. C. Olympic Park Proposal - The Port District met with several representatives and officials of the Olympic Committee. Library Director Palmer gave an overview of the meeting. The Port District's suggested image of the Bayfront would include cultural tourism along with world-class art. The Port District will present a Letter of Intent to the Olympics for official approval and formal permission to use the concept/scheme•of the Olympics for future Bayfront development design. The Commission will be updated of the progress. �7_ • • Cultural Arts Commission Meeting Minutes 3. NEW BUSINESS - `A October 12, 1998 a. EXPO 199 - The concept of the EXPO 99 will be discontinued. The new image will focus on ARTS. A Salsa Making Contest, Dance Contest, Children's Expanded Art Fair were ideas that were suggested. The one day event will take place April 10, 1999 at Marina View Park. The Commissioners were asked to support and help with the event. A Sub -Committee was formed. Commissioners Russell and Clement were appointed to serve and assist staff with the event. 5. STAFF REPORT - October 1998 is dedicated to Arts and Humanities Month. Copies of the presentation of resolutions were distributed to the Commissioners. A list of 19 organizations receiving certificates for their financial support for Music in the Park 1998 was distributed. 6. COMMUNICATIONS a. Oral Communications - None b. Written Communications - None C. Commissioner's Remarks - The Commission members directed staff to assist with a plaque for a presentation to Chair Wheeland expressing their appreciation for serving on the Cultural Arts Commission. 7. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m. to the regular scheduled meeting on Monday, November 9, 1998 at 5:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Elizabeth Bottorff
