HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-11-11 CAC MINS`4*.e�: tiycd V MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Tuesday, 5:00 p.m. Conference Room #1 November 11, 1998 Civic Center Library CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Clement, Curd, Flach, Molina and Virchis MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Russell GUEST PRESENT: Jeri Vanderpool STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin and Todd 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Clement\Curd) 6-0 to approve the minutes of October 12, 1998. 2. OLD BUSINESS - a. Fine Arts Festival - The Festival is scheduled for . Saturday, April 10, 1999. The planning kick-off meeting will be held November 23, 1998, 3:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. The main focus will be the arts. The Fair's events will consist of a Silent Auction, Children's Interacting Program, and Culinary Contest. There will be three entertainment stages a) professional, b) schools, and c) community. b. Backstage Tour of Coors AmphiTheater - A backstage tour is pending. C. Olympic Park Proposal - This item will be continued. d. Performing Arts Committee - This item was continued. MSC (Clement/Curd) 6-0 to direct staff to prepare a letter to the Mayor requesting the performing arts funds received to date. This will assist in determining the financial budget for the 1999 City's 19 days of use. 3. NEW BUSINESS - a. Appointment of Chair - Commissioner Al Gore will serve as the 1998-99 Cultural Arts Commission Chair. • b. Appointment of Vice Chair - MSC (Virchis/Flach) 5-1 (Clement opposed) to appoint Commissioner Clement to serve as the 1998-99 Vice Chair. • • Cultural Arts Commission 2 Meeting Minutes November 9, 1998 C. Business Cards - Official City of Chula Vista business cards will be ordered and distributed to the Commissioners. The Cultural Arts Office address and phone number will appear on the cards. There will be a blank space for each Commissioner to write-in their own names. d. San Diego National and International Black Film Festival Endorsement - MSC (Virchis/Curd) 6-0 to prepare a letter of endorsement on behalf of the Commission to the Film Festival Chair supporting the annual event. Staff will contact the Downtown Business Association to encourage the members to prepare a similar letter of endorsement. 5. STAFF REPORT - Mr. Todd attended: a) CALAA meeting held in San Diego b) NEA meeting c) Chula Vista High School performing arts programs A Mariachi Festival will be held at Copley Hall in December. 6. COMMUNICATIONS a. Oral Communications - None b. Written Communications - A draft letter was read expressing the Commission's appreciation of former Commissioner Lee Wheeland. A plaque will be given to Ms. Wheeland. C. Commissioner's Remarks - Commissioner Virchis was acknowledged for his dedication of 25 years of service in performing arts. , Cultural Arts Coordinator Todd was congratulated for his great advocacy to the devotion to the City's cultural arts. The newly appointed Commissioner Hector Molina was introduced and welcomed to the Commission. 7.
