REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Clement, Curd,
Flach, Russell, Tubbs, Vanderpool and Virchis
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Molina
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin and Todd
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Curb\Flach) 8-0 to approve the
minutes of November 9, 1998.
2. OLD BUSINESS -
a. A Taste of the Arts, By the Bay
The Community Planning Meeting was held December 14,
1998, 3:30 p.m. at the Chula Vista Public Library.
Assignments and tasks were distributed and discussed.
The event is scheduled for April 10, 1998 at Marina
View Park. The Commission suggested adding a Volunteer
Committee.
b. San Diego National and International Black Film
Festival Endorsement Letter - The Commission reviewed
and discussed the endorsement letter that was sent to
the Mayor and City Council. The Commission was in
agreement future correspondence will be prepared by a
designated writer and reviewed by staff.
MSC (Virchis/Curd) 8-0 to prepare a letter of
endorsement on behalf of the Commission addressed to
the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce, ConVis and the
City supporting the annual event.
C. Thank you letter to Lee Wheeland - The Commission
received a copy of the appreciation letter sent to
outgoing Commissioner Lee Wheeland.
d. Backstage Tour of Coors AmphiTheater - The
Commissioners attended a backstage tour on November 21.
Members of the Friends of the Arts also attended. The
Commission requested scheduling an additional tour for
the Commissioners who were unable to attend.

e. Business Cards- The official City of Chula Vista
business cards have been ordered. The order should be
completed and distributed to the Commissioners at the
next meeting.
3. NEW BUSINESS - None
4. STAFF REPORT - On-going events/projects are as follows:
1) Music in the Park
2) McCandliss Awards
3) Summer Pops Concert
4) Music Competition
The Japanese American Historical Society and Friends of the
Museum are presenting a new exhibit at the Chula Vista
Heritage Museum on January 24, 1999, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
5. COMMUNICATIONS
a. Oral Communications - None
b. Written Communications - None
is C. Commissioner's Remarks - In order to better assist the
Commissioners with a comprehensive schedule of events,
a request was made to receive an event calendar.
The newly appointed Commissioner Dr. Walter Tubbs was
introduced and welcomed to the Commission.
Commissioner Vanderpool updated the Commission on the
Port District Public Art Committee meeting. The
Olympic Park proposal was presented to the Port
District Public Art Committee. The Olympic Committee's
approval of the Olympic Park proposal is still pending.
The Friends of the Arts invited the Commissioners to
attend a meeting/party on Wednesday, December 16 at
Melody Cernitz' house.
6. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. to the
regular scheduled meeting on Monday, January 11, 1999 at
5:00 P.M.
