CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

CALL MEETING TO ORDER-ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Clement, Flach,
Russell, Tubbs, Vanderpool
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Curd, Molina and Virchis
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaisons McMartin and Todd
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Clement/Tubbs) 6-0 to approve the
minutes of January 11, 1999 .
2 . OLD BUSINESS -
a. A Taste of the Arts by the Bay Community Planning
Meeting - January 17 at 3 :30 p.m. Civic Center
Library - The meeting will focus on volunteers,
• marketing and public relations .
b. Coors AmphiTheater/second tour - The Amphitheater is
currently in the process of a major reorganization.
The tour is postponed at this time.
C. Olympic Park Proposal - The proposal has been sent to
the ILC.
d. Performing Arts Committee - The Mayor -has appointed the
seven Committee members . The members consist of :
Mayor Horton - Chair
Barry Russell - Cultural Arts Commission
Bill Virchis - Cultural Arts Commission
Larry Piranda - Sweetwater H. S . District
Bonnie Johnson - C.V. Elementary School District
Scott Alevy - Member at large
Representative - Coors AmphiTheater
David Palmer - Staff Liaison
Nora McMartin - Staff Liaison
Ric Todd - Staff Liaison
The first meeting is scheduled for February 18, 1999 .
e. Business Cards - The Cutural Arts Commission business
• cards will soon be distributed to the Commissioners .

f . San Diego National & International Black Film
Festival - February 26-28, 1999 - Invitations were
distributed to the Commissioners . The event is a black
tie affair at the Regal Theaters on East "H" Street .
g. Letter to welcome new council members - A welcome and
introduction from the Cultural Arts Commission was sent
to the Council members . Councilperson Salas
acknowledged the letter.
h. Japanese Exhibit, Chula Vista Heritage Museum, "The
Hundred Year Road: Japan to San Diego, A Japanese
Journey" - The exhibit was a huge success with a large
attendance.
Japanese American Historical Society and Friends of
Odiwara are planning a trip to the Japanese American
Museum in Los Angeles, on May 1, 1999 .
Mayor Horton is planning a trip to Odiwara, Japan, May
19-29, 1999 . Anyone interested can contact the Mayor' s
office .
• i . Taste of the Arts and Black Film Festival
correspondence - The appropriate letters have been
completed.
3 . NEW BUSINESS -
a. Gayle McCandliss Awards Committee - MSC (Clement/Tubbs)
6-0 to present four $100 awards to the 1999 candidates .
The recipients will receive their awards at the annual
Awards Banquet . The banquet date has not scheduled.
b. Music Competition - The annual Music Competition is
scheduled for May 15-16, 1999.
C. Approval of arts organization membership fees - MSC
(Russell/Clement) 6-0 to allocate funds from the
Commission budget . The Commission agreed to encumber
$100 of the Membership account balance and $125 from
the Advertising account for membership in several arts
organizations.
4 . STAFF REPORT
The annual Visual Arts Foundation Oscars Night is
scheduled for March 21, 1999 at Trophy' s Restaurant, La
• Jolla at 5 : 00 p.m.

a. Oral Communications - None
b. Written Communications - The Chula Vista Art Guild
Newsletter was read. The Art Guild and Bonita Artists
met and determined the possibility of creating a Chula
Vista Art Gallery.
On-Stage Productions is in the process of relocating
their Theater next to Just Java Restaurant on Third
Avenue. The art groups are considering displaying
their work in the Theater lobby.
C. Commissioner' s Remarks -
The Annual Beautification Awards Banquet is scheduled
for February 11, 1999.
d. Friends of the Arts - The Friends are busy closing
their books for 1998 . They expressed continued support
working with the Cultural Arts Commission.
• e. Port Commission Report - The Port Art Committee is
presently involved with several projects throughout
South Bay.
6 . ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 7 : 00 p.m. to the
regular scheduled meeting on Monday, March 8, 1999 at 5 : 00
p.m.
