REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Clement, Flach,
Russell, Tubbs, Vanderpool and Virchis
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioner Molina
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison Todd
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Virchis/Flach) 7-0 to approve the
minutes of February 8, 1999.
2. OLD BUSINESS -
a. A Taste of the Arts by the Bay - Community Planning
Meetings are scheduled for March 10,21,31 and April 7,
1999, 3:30 p.m. Civic Center Library. Over 300 booth
participant invitations were distributed. To date
there has been a very good response. The deadline is
March 12, 1999. The Commission discussed and made many
suggestions for the Silent Auction. The Star News will
be publishing an insert in their newspaper on the
weekend of the event.
b. Olympic Park Proposal - The tentative discussion and
approval for the park proposal is approximately March
15, 1999.
C. Performing Arts Committee - The first meeting was held
on February 18, 1999. The kick-off meeting consisted
of welcomes and introductions. The second meeting is
scheduled for March 10, 1999.
d. Business Cards - The new Cultural Arts Commission
business cards were distributed to the Commissioners!
Mr. Todd will maintain the supply of the extra business
cards.
3. NEW BUSINESS -
a. Music Competition - The account balance is
approximately $1,300. Letters for donations will be
sent. The music competition is scheduled for May 15
• and the concert is scheduled for May 16 at the Civic
Center Library. The Commissioners were strongly
�� encouraged to support and attend the event.

b. Gayle McCandliss Awards - Applications were
distributed. The awards will be given to high school
students. Nominations will be due April 12. The
Committee will review the nominations approximately
April 19. The Awards Banquet is scheduled for the
second week in May. The Sub -Committee needs another
person to serve.
C. Friends of the Art/Joint Facility - On -Stage
Productions is in the process of leasing 219 Third
Avenue. The Chula Vista Art Guild and Bonita Artists
will be opening an art gallery in the theater lobby.
The gallery will be named the Downtown Art Center.
d. Nora McMartin Update - Nora is doing better. She will
not be returning to work for approximately eight weeks.
The Commission agreed to arrange to send flowers.
4. STAFF REPORT
5. COMMUNICATIONS
a. Oral Communications - None
b. Written Communications - A letter of resignation was
sent to the Mayor by Cultural Arts Commissioner Brent
Curd, effective March 8, 1999. The City Clerk will
post the vacancy. The Commission agreed to send Mr.
Curd an appreciation letter.
C. Commissioner's Remarks - Commissioner Flach is serving
on the Design Review Board. The Board is reviewing and
touring the nominations for the annual beautification
awards.
d. Friends of the Arts - The Friends are giving their
support and working with promoting the future Art
Center.
e. Port Commission Report - The Committee did not have a
regularly scheduled February 1999 meeting. The next
meeting is scheduled for March 18, 1999.
6. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m. to the
regular scheduled meeting on Monday, April 12, 1999 at 5:00
p.m.
