REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

CALL MEETING TO ORDER-ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Vice Chair Clement, Commissioners Molina,
Russell, Vanderpool and Virchis
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioner Gore, Flach, Tubbs
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison Todd and Palmer
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Virchis/Russell) 5-0 approving
the minutes of March 8, 1999 .
2 . OLD BUSINESS -
a. A Taste of the Arts by the Bay - April 10, 1999
Evaluation
The event was very successful. Mr. Todd thanked the
Commission for their help and support . The Commission
discussed the details of the event and made suggestions
for upcoming years. The Commission agreed to begin
planning immediately for next year' s event .
b. Performing Arts Committee - The Task Force has had
three meetings to date. The Committee is prioritizing
criteria for ratifying the funds . Changes to the
Amphitheater contract is will also begin reviewed. Mr.
Virchis suggested the City revenue portion needs to be
reviewed and perhaps audited.
C. Gayle McCandliss Award - The nomination application
deadline is April 16, 1999 . To date 15 nominations
have been received. The Committee will review and
decide on the winners . The awards will be presented at
the annual Beautification Awards . The Awards Banquet
to date has not been scheduled.
d. Music Competition Award - The Music Compeititon date
has been rescheduled. The new date is May 22-23, 1999 .
The competition will be held at the Civic Center
Library.
• The Committee has made a request to the City Council to
allocate funds for the Competition. The request is
scheduled for the Council meeting of April 13 , 1999 for

e. Beautification Award Committee - Commissioner Flach is
serving on the Committee. The Committee is reviewing
the nominations . On-going field trips have been
scheduled.
3 . NEW BUSINESS -
a. Friends of the Art - The Grand Opening of the Downtown
Art Center at 291 Third Avenue is scheduled for May 1,
1999 .
b. Nora McMartin Update - Nora is slowly recovering.
C . Upcoming Events - There will be a Cinco de Mayo
Festival on Third Avenue. The summer concert series
schedule is being finalized.
4 . STAFF REPORT - Several public officials sent correspondence
responding to the Taste of the Arts invitation.
The annual CALLA Conference is scheduled for April 30 at the
Westgate Hotel, San Diego. Everyone is welcome.
• 5 . COMMUNICATIONS
a. Oral Communications - None
b. Written Communications - A letter from Humboldt
University was read thanking Mr. Todd for his arts and
humanities presentation.
C. Commissioners Remarks - Commissioner Virchis requested
the Commission' s input on an idea to present to the
Performing Arts Committee. The suggestion was to
arrange an Arts and Cultural display at the Coors
Amphitheater. The table could be manned prior to the
concerts by the Commissioners. The Commission agreed
with the suggestion.
d. Friends of the Arts Remarks - Everyone is invited to
the ribbon cutting/ice cream social ceremony for the
Downtown Art Center opening.
e. Port Commission Report - A new public art project will
be dedicated at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza on June
13 . Everyone is invited.
The Committee is reviewing several projects including a
City of San Diego public art project .
• The Olympic Park proposal is still pending approval .

6 . ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 6 :45 p.m. to the
regular scheduled meeting on Monday, May 10, 1999 at 5 : 00
p.m.
