MINUTES OF THE
REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
Monday, 5:00 p.m. Conference Room #1

CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Flach, Russell,
Vanderpool and Virchis
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Clement, Molina and Tubbs
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Virchis/Russell) 5-0 approving
the minutes of April 12, 1999.
2. OLD BUSINESS -
a. A Taste of the Arts by the Bay - April 8, 2000
Cultural Arts Coordinator Todd is working with Gary
Bell Design to establish a graphic image to use at the
next annual Festival. Draft art design samples will be
presented at the next meeting. The Commission
discussed the 1999 Festival and made suggestions for
the 2000 Festival.
b. Olympic Park Proposal - Nothing to report.
C. Performing Arts Committee Report - The Task Force is in
the process of preparing and reviewing the criteria.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 16, 1999.
d. Music Competition Award - The annual Music Competition
was successfully held May 22-23, 1999 at the Civic
Center Library.
e. Gayle McCandless Awards - Four awards were presented at
the City's annual Beautification Award Banquet.
This item will be on next month's agenda in order to
review the application/nomination process and appoint a
new Sub -Committee Chair.

This item is continued.

3. NEW BUSINESS -
a) Summer Concerts
1) Music in the Park - The concerts have been
scheduled and flyers have been distributed. The
first concert was held June 13, 1999 at Memorial
Park Bowl.
2) POP'S Concert - continued
3) Collaboration Concert with Eastlake Company -
continued
b) City Budget and new account systems - This item is
continued.
4. STAFF REPORT - The Commission welcomed Nora's return. Nora
reported she is doing well and is happy to be back.
5. COMMUNICATIONS
a. Oral Communications - None
40a. Written Communications - The Friends of the Arts sent a
letter thanking the Commission for their chair
contribution. The Commission is invited to the On -Stage
Production Theater and the Downtown Art Center.
b. Commissioner's Remarks - Commissioner Russell,
Southwestern College, has been contacted by the
Bonitafest Committee. The Commission discussed their
participation in the Festival, such as a booth or
parade, etc. The event is scheduled for September 27,
1999. Mr. Todd will be the contact person.
The Commissioners agreed not to conduct the regularly
scheduled Cultural Arts Commission meeting during the
month of August, 1999.
C. Friends of the Arts Remarks - No report.
d. Port Commission Report - No report.
6. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m. to the
regular scheduled meeting on Monday, July 12, 1999 at 5:00
p.m.
