HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-07-12 CAC MINSr • MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Monday, 5:00 p.m. Conference Room #1 July 12, 1999 Civic Center Library CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Clement, Flach, Molina, Tubbs, and Vanderpool MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioner Russell and Virchis STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin and Todd 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Clement/Flash) 6-0 approving the minutes of June 14, 1999. 2. OLD BUSINESS - a. A Taste of the Arts by the Bay - April 8, 2000 Gary Bell Design Firm - This item will be continued. The graphic image has not been completed. The Commission viewed a videotape of the April, 1999 Taste of the Arts Festival provided by Commissioner Molina. The tape will be edited and available for next year's event. b. Olympic Park Proposal - The Olympic Committee approved the proposed Chula Vista Bayfront Olympic Park. The proposed park's image will reflect the olympic experience. Staff will follow-up with the Mayor's office. The Port Art Committee will meet Thursday, July 15 at 3:00 p.m. The meeting is opened to the public. C. Performing Arts Committee Report - The Task Force met and are continuing to make contract criteria changes for the application, funding and qualifying process. d. CALAA Report/State Budget/California Arts Council/Governor's Conference on Arts San Diego hosted the annual state CALAA Conference. The State's budget includes monies for the arts. Chula Vista is on the list to be considered for funds. is California Arts Council is offering a free workshop program for training governing bodies on the concept of cultural tourism. Meeting Minutes r MSC (Clement/Tubbs) 6-0 agreed: 1) Contact the California Arts Council for additional information on the workshop 2) Direct Commission Clement to prepare a letter, addressed to the City Council and City Administration, informing them of the workshop details, emphasize the generation of cultural tourism industry statistics and strongly encourage their participation 3) Suggest the City Council include the Cultural Arts Commission in the CAC presentation 4) Have staff review the correspondence prior to forwarding to the City Council and Administration 3. NEW BUSINESS - A. Summer Concerts 1) Music in the Park - The free summer concert series are continuing on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. in Memorial Park. The season finale concert will be held August 29 at the Community Park in Eastlake. The Star News provided a multi -page colored publication of the concert series schedule. 2) POP's Concert - The annual POPS Concert is scheduled for August 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Marina View Park. B. " Make a Circus" free event, funded by the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund, and California Arts Council, will be held July 27, Tuesday, noon, at Voyager Park, East " J" Street.
