CULTURAL ARTS COMNUSSION

CALL MEETING TO ORDER ROLL CALL ..
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gorr,, Commissioners Clement,FIach, Molina,
Vanderpool
MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Tubbs and Virchis
STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaisons McMartin and Todd
1. APPROVAL OF M S TITES - No minutes-September meeting cancelled due to lack of quorum
2. ULD BUSINESS
A. The"Taste of the Arts by the Eay"meetings are being held on a regular basis. The next
community planning meeting will be held on Wednesday,October 20`6 from 4-5 p.m.in
the Civic Center Library's andIorium. Ric will send out a memo with future meeting
dates: 11/3, 1 V17&12/$
Kay Wagner,new Executive Director for the Children's Museum has agreed to be time
third anchor for the children's workshop area
Allison Curti&.lean Isaac will be doing a workshop on motion,education and dance
(may need a dance floor)
Tony Curti&Steve Estrada,a rchitects,will do a workshop with kids on building
Ric is working,with the San Diego Symphony they are interested in introducing
themsdvcs to the South Bay
Patricia McQuater,Cbair/Port Commission,would like to come to a CAC meeting
Ric has advised.Harlan.Skinner,Fine Arts,Sweetwater High School District,drat the
midge stage will be devoted to Sweetwater Performing High School groups and is
working with Dennis Maundo Band Director Hrlltop High,and Larry Peromk Principal
Chula Vista Mgh School
Ric has been talking with John Haynes.CEO/California C itesforthe Arts Escondido,
the Coors Amphitheater(possibly PSAs could be shown during intermission).Nancy �

-Commissioner Molina needs raugh presentation and narrative for the spots so they can
be sent out to sponsm
-Commissioner Vanderpool would like to have a pre-meeting for all volunteers with fact
sheet. The Library's Volunteci Coordimtor will assist with getting volunteers

B. Commissioner Vanderpool saic that$600,000 has been allocated for the Olympic Park
Proposal but she has no additio Sal information on this project She will follow-tip on

C. the Performing&Visual Arts Task Force to the City Attorney who has forwarded them
to Coor's attorney. It was discussed that the Cuttw'al Arts Commission will be eligible to
apply for grants through the giant's application process
D. Ric reported on the District Cl[air's Meeting,Culture Net(Cultural Internet Service)
developed by the California Arts Council,Getty Center and the California Assembly of
Local Arts Agencies
E. Ric disemssed the purpose of the CALA Public Art Workshop and the importance of
having it held Dere for council and city management Jncluded in the workshop will be
topics like: what is public art .why public an, developing a public arts program,and
creating a percent for funding the arts. Ric will work with CALA is setting up a date.
Hector discussed the October issue of San Ilicpo Map7ir<e that.discusses using artas a
voice for border issues and finding. Commissioner Clement suggested that the
comtubs-oners find out from tie Mayor and Council where they stand on the arts. The
basic role of the Commissioners is to serve as advocates. Each commissioner will be
asked to take on a leadership role in a specific area such as public art,festivals,cultural
tourism,arts as communication,border issues and art art in education,business and an,
art and politics,etc. There nee ds to be a half-day workshop for these issues. It is a high
priority to create a culttstal artf:plan and public arts policy- ?Mora and Ric will work on
Us. They will also work on a website for the CAC.
I NEW BUSINESS
A. At the October IP Council meting Carmen E.Quintana will be given the Oatb of
Office for the Cultural Arts Ccmntission- There will still be one vacancy on the
Commission
B- Elections were hcld. MSC(Flnah/Vanderpool) 5-0 that the current officers remain in
office(Chair/Gore,Vice-Chair/Clemmi)
C- The Office or Cultural Ars ha:;been asked to work on public art for Olympic Parkway
and the Chula Vista Animal SlAter(there are no fiordsavailable for public art)
D. The Office of Cultural Arts will be taking over the direction of the Rosemary Lane
Galeria. Applications were res iewed and artists selected for exln'bits on October 8th
E. The City of Chula Vista will bE;holding a Millennium Festival on December 4d,in
downtown Chola Vista There will be a tree—lighting eeremovy,crafts for children,music
and a Yule Parade. The Of of Cultural Arts will be responsible for decorating the r
Milienruum Tree and for two c ancerts to be bold on 12/11&12/18 in the Memorial Bowl

A_ Commissioner Flach has agrees i to continue to help with the Gayle McCandliss Awards.
A meeting will be scheduled for Flack,McMartin&Todd to work on this
B- The Music Competition will be discussed at the next meeting. With the resignation of
Commissioner Russell,a new CAC liaison will be needed-the info needs to be ready by
February
