REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Flach, Quintana,
Redo, and Tubbs
MEMBERS EXCUSED: Commissioner Vanderpool
MEMBERS UNEXCUSED: Commissioners Molina, Virchis
STAFF PRESENT: None
GUESTS PRESENT: Nico Portillo, Mario Torero
1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - MSC (Redo/Gore) 5-0 approving the
minutes of May 8, 2000.
2. OLD BUSINESS -
a. Taste of the Arts by the Bay - The Commission discussed
19 on-going ideas for future Festivals.
b. The Performing & Visual Arts Grant Awards - This item
was continued.
c. "Music in the Park" - The calendar of concerts will
be sent to the Commissioners.
d. The "Summer Pops" Concert - The details of the
concert will be sent to the Commissioners.
e. "Make A Circus" - The information will be sent to the
Commissioners.
f. Election of Vice -Chair - MSC (Gore/Flack) 5-0 to
nominate Commissioner Quintana to the position of Vice -
Chair. Ms. Quintana accepted the position pending the
outcome of a change in her job.
3. NEW BUSINESS
a. Performing & Visual Arts Fund Allocation for the
Commission - The Commission received the following
allocation of funds:
Taste of the Arts Festival $2,500
• Music in the Park $2,500

b. Commission use of the 18 community days at the Coors -
The Commission was asked for ideas and suggestions for
the days the City can schedule events at the
AmphiTheater.
C. Port Art Proposal - This item was continued.
d. Downtown Chula Vista Arts Center - The Cinema 6
Theaters property on Third Avenue is for sale. Nico
Portillo, a representative for Councilperson Salas,
presented the idea of the property to be used for a
Cultural Arts Center for performing arts. MSC
Redo/Flack) 5-0 to support the exploration in concept
for the purpose of a cultural and visual arts center.
The Commission was encouraged to contact all interested
parties by sending letters of support to the Mayor and
Council.
e. San Diego Art & Sol - This item was continued.
f. Recruitment for a new CAC Board Member - The Commission
was reminded of the vacancy.
g. Juried art show at "Taste of the Arts" (CV Art
Guild/Gene Clement) - This item was continued.
h. NEA Grant - This item was continued.
i. Port Arts Grant - This item was continued.
j. Otay Recreation Center Mural - This item was continued.
4. COMMITTEE REPORTS
a. Gayle McCandliss (MOSAIC Article)- The MOSAIC
Newsletter published an excellent article on the annual
McCandliss Awards. Sub -Committee Chair Quintana
distributed a copy,of a letter sent to Mrs. McCandliss
sharing details of the award banquet and the recipient
of the annual award.

7. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m. to Monday,
July 10, 2000 at 5:00 p.m.
