HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-10-09 CAC MINSMinutes of the Regular Meeting of the CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Monday, 5:00 p.m. Conference Room #2 October 9, 2000 Civic Center Library CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Flach, Tubbs, Quintana, Redo, Molina, Vanderpool, Virchis MEMBERS EXCUSED: None MEMBERS UNEXCUSED: None STAFF PRESENT: Staff LiaisonsTodd and McMartin GUESTS PRESENT: Melody Cernitz, Pastor Donald Goodwill, Ron Bolles, is Sylvia Lugo 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — MSC (Redo/Gore) 5-0 approving the minutes of June 12, 2000 2. OLD BUSINESS a. Pastor Goodwill said that he has applied to be a Commissioner b. The Commission would like to utilize one or two of the 18 community days at the Coors Amphitheater. Staff advised that they could only support one day at this time. C. The Commission voted in support of the proposed Downtown Chula Vista Arts Center - MSC (Virchis/Redo) 5-0 It was recommended that Commissioners Molina, Virchis and Redo serve as a liaison group from the Cultural Arts Commission to the Downtown Arts Center to assist with the project should additional input from the Commission be needed. d. Carmen Quintana was confirmed as Vice Chair—MSC (Virchis/Redo) 5-0 NEW BUSINESS a. The Commission voted in support of a Port Art Proposal. They felt that Joe Sam's proposal was good, but would like to see alternative choices of art from other artists.— MSC (Redo/Quintana) 4-1 b. The Commission also recommended that the Cultural Arts Commission set up a Public Art Committee • • 0 Cultural Arts Commission -2- October 9, 2000 c. Chair Gore will write a letter to the Chula Vista Middle School with the $100 donation from the silent auction - MSC (Redo/Virchis) 5-0 d. Ron Bolles presented his proposal for use of the Coors Amphitheater by the secondary schools in the south bay. His concept was approved by the commission for either of the plans (with no financial support from the Commission) as proposed in his Memo dated 7/10/00 - MSC (Virchis/Flach) 5- 1. 3. COMMITTEE REPORTS - No Committee Reports were given 4. STAFF REPORT 5. COMMUNICATIONS a. Melody Cernitz, the Chula Vista representative on the Port Arts Committee , discussed the new memorial for Ron McElliott which will be dedicated at the Chula Vista Marina in January. It will be a 12' wind harp created by Ross Barrable. Melody said that there will be a Port District Meeting to discuss the Joe Sam proposal. Bill Virchis and Chris Redo expressed concern about the process used to select Joe Sam's sculpture (6 pieces/$96,000) and Matt Flach was concerned with the issue of safety 6.
