CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — MSC (Virchis/Flach) 5-0 approving the minutes
of January 8, 2001.
The Commission congratulated Commissioner Virchis on being the 2001 recipient of the
Shiley Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Excellence.
2. OLD BUSINESS
A. Recruitment of new CAC Board Member — The vacancy still remains open.
B. Performing & Visual Arts fund Grant Update — The Task Force Committee is
scheduled to meet March 7, 2001 to review the applications.
C. Downtown Arts Center status — The Cinema Star has pending court issues.
The planning use of the theaters is on hold. MSC (Virchis/Flach) 5-0 to
prepare a letter to Council reconfirming the Commission's initial support of
the importance of the priority of a Chula Vista Art Center.
D. Taste of the Arts Update — Mr. Todd distributed an update on the status of the
Festival. The events scheduled were discussed. The elements include artist
vendors, juried art exhibition, children's art workshops, samba art parade,
silent art auction, food vendors, and entertainment. The list of sponsors and
partners were distributed. The next planning meeting is scheduled for March
7, 2001 in the Library Auditorium at 4:00 p.m.

3. NEW BUSINESS
A. Cost for 18 community days us at the Coors Amphitheater — Production
estimate expenses were distributed to the Commission. The Commission
discussed the issues involved .in planning the use of scheduling an event at the
Amphitheater.
The original request from CVHS was discussed. Ron Bolles, CVHS, will be
contacted to review the exact funding details of a potential event held at the
Amphitheater. MSC (Virchis/Gore) 5-0 to support the idea in concept. The
Commission was encouraged to work towards scheduling an event as soon as
possible. This item will be continued to next month's meeting.
B. CAC's vision for public art on the bayfront — continued.
C. CAC Budget Update — The Fiscal year 2001 budget for expenditures and
available balances to date were distributed to the Commission for: 1) Cultural
Arts Commission and 2) Cultural Arts Community Events.
D. Update on Governor's Budget — continued.
E. Ware Memorial sculpture — Mr. Flach and Mr. Todd are working with the
Veteran's Commission to set up a Committee in establishing a War Memorial
sculpture at the Bayfront.
F. Use of 18 Days Community Use Days at Coors ideas (warm-up bands/display
panel) — The feasibility to underwrite warm-up bands and purchase a
Commission display booth/panel will be discussed by the Arts Task Force
Committee.
G. McCandliss Awards — The annual Beautification Awards is scheduled for May
3, 2001. Commissioner Quintana is chairing the Sub -Committee for 2001.

7. ADJOURNMENT - The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m. to Monday, March 12,
2001.
