HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-03-12 CAC MINS• .l� Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Monday, 5:00 p.m. March 12, 2001 CALL MEETING TO ORDER -ROLL CALL MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Gore, Commissioners Vanderpool, Virchis MEMBERS EXCUSED: Flach MEMBERS UNEXCUSED: Molina, Redo, Tubbs STAFF PRESENT: Staff Liaison McMartin and Todd Conference Room #2 Civic Center Library McGlade, Quintana, Chair Gore introduced and welcomed the newly appointed Commissioner Robert McGlade. 1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — MSC (Virchis/Quintana) 5-0 approving the minutes of February 12, 2001. 2. OLD BUSINESS A. Budget update — Staff member Shauna Stokes distributed and reviewed the Fiscal Year 2001 budget for expenditures and available balances for 1) Cultural Arts Commission and 2) Cultural Arts Community Events and 3) McCandliss Memorial Arts. B. Downtown Arts Center- An agenda report to Council is in the process of being prepared on the Proposed Cultural Arts Center. The agenda statement includes requesting funds to 1) award a contract for a feasibility study and 2) amend the Consultant Services Agreement to prepare a fundraising study for the proposed Arts Center. The Commission will be sent the agenda item information prior to the meeting of March 20, 2001. The Commissioners were strongly encouraged to attend. MSC (Virchis/McGlade) to continue to support and endorse the process and highly prioritize the concept of this City project. C. Performing & Visual Arts Task Force Meeting Update — The Task Force Committee will be meeting to review the 36 applications. An information memo was distributed of the Selection of the Performing & Visual Arts Fund Grants for the 2001 Cycle. An update will be given at the next meeting. D. Taste of the Arts Update — The detailed annual "A Taste of the Arts, by the Bay" Festival informational elements was distributed to the Commissioners. The Silent Auction information was discussed. Sample support letters for donations for the Silent Auction were distributed. The Commissioners are needed to seek donations. Cultural Arts Commission -2-, March 12, 2001 E. War Memorial Update (Flack) continued I. CAC's vision for public art on the CV Bayfront - continued 3. NEW BUSINESS A. Welcomed new CA Commissioner - Robert McGlade B. McCandliss Awards - Beautification Awards Planning Meeting will be held March 19, 2001. The Beautification Awards dinner is scheduled for May 3, 2001. Chair Quintana discussed the details of the annual McCandliss Awards. I C. Chula Vista Music Competition - The Ninth Annual Classical Music Competition will be held May 12, 2001 in the Chula Vista Civic Public Library. D. Port of San Diego Public Art Banners Reception - The Commissioners were • invited to attend the reception on March 12, 2001. 4. COMMITTEE REPORTS - None 5. STAFF REPORT None 6. COMMUNICATIONS - The Visual Arts Foundation in association with the Cinema Society of San Diego, the San Diego Film Commission, NATAS and Sea World will present Oscar Night America Party on Sunday March 25, 2001. The Commissioners received the informational flyer. Port Public Arts Committee Report - Melody Cernitz, Arts Committee Representative, presehted the San Diego Unified Port District Public Art Master Plan Overlay. Art, culture and community accessibility to San Diego Bay are top priorities for the Port District with the Public Art Program an important element of this vision. After discussion a Sub -Committee was formed to develop the process to use to include public art on the Bayfront. The Committee will include Jeri Vanderpool, Bob McGlade, Nora McMartin, Ric Todd and Melody Cernitz. 7. ADJOURNMENT -The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m. to Monday, April 9, 2001.
