MINUTES OF
CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION

1. Call to Order/ Roll Call

2. Approval of Minutes
Motion was made (Knowlton/Gore) to approve the Minutes of January 10, 2005. The
motion was carried.
3. Guest Presentation — Julie Frye, San Diego Foundation
Julie Frye, Arts & Culture Manager for the San Diego Foundation, gave a presentation on
work being done by the San Diego Foundation along with information on other
foundations, particularly the Irvine Foundation, regarding funding for art. Issues as to
how to bridge the generation gap were discussed and Ms. Frye advised these types of
issues were being addressed in a survey because of their importance.
4. Old Business
a. Report on Bay Front Development — Cornell
A news article was distributed and the Commission was advised of a Bay Front
meeting to be held on Thursday, February 17 at 7pm at the Chula Vista's
Woman's Club.
b. Report on Urban Core Development — Cornell
A news article was distributed.

c. Labyrinth Project — Redo
Five City departments have reviewed the concept of the Labyrinth but are unsure
of the near-term land usages, which are under consideration by the Bay Front
Master Plan Study. Susan O'Shaughnessy of the Labyrinth Committee requested
that Commissioners request the City Council approve the project in concept so
she could begin fund raising. Commissioners advised her they would not make a
specific recommendation to Council until the land usage issues were made
clearer. They encouraged Ms. O'Shaughnessy to pursue private fundraising
efforts.
5. Committee Reports
a. Taste of the Arts / McCandliss VIP Reception — Cornell
Glennalie of "Cooking with Glennalie" will cater the reception. It was noted that
approximately 3 cases of wine would need to be donated this year and cost for the
dinner will be approximately $10.00 a person. The Commission is to provide
beverages, glasses, small plates, table coverings, guest tables and silverware.
The reception will take place on Thursday, May 50' from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the
Chula Vista Woman's Club.
6. Staff Updates
a. Chula Vista's Taste of the Arts Festival
Twenty-five featured artists have been confirmed and 5 other artists' applications
have been received. Food vendor applications are slow but should be
forthcoming
b. Visual & Performing Arts Task Force
Grant applications are due Friday, February 25'.
c. Arts Master Plan Process
Ten consultant proposals were received by the deadline and a selection committee
will initially interview four firms.
d. Public Arts Committee Nominations
February 18'' is the deadline and 3 nominations have been received so far.
Commissioner was advised that many more were needed by the deadline.
e. Loaned Public Art Pieces
Two "Urban Tree" art pieces have been loaned to the City for 2 years, one is to be
located at the Civic Center Library and the other at the Nature Center.
f. Public Art Grant Proposal
Office of Cultural Arts applied to the San Diego Woman's Foundation for funding
of a public art piece for the new Rancho del Rey Library. The funding request
was subsequently declined.

g. McCandliss Art Sale
0 Some Taste of the Arts Festival artists have donated work to the art sale.
7. New Business
None
8. Oral Communications
Commissioner Knowlton advised that the Wednesday night film festival is working out
well.
Redo visited the Mayor and felt the Mayor understood the issues faced by the
Commission.
9. ADJOURMENT Adjourned at 7:10pm
The next Cultural Arts Commission meeting will be held at 5:30PM on March 14, 2005 in the
Library Conference Room of the Civic Center Library.
